(based on 14 ratings in 2016)

2016

"Each department runs a monthly know-how session to keep up to date with legal developments. The firm also puts on a business writing-skills course among others."
First year trainee, London
"I had a very good induction programme as a trainee."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"Day-to-day training is good as you get lots of access to partners and senior associates who can help with legal knowledge. Official training sessions could be more regular."
Second year trainee, Surrey
"So far, the training scheme has been well structured and the induction was very thorough."
First year trainee, Guildford
"In my first three weeks I attended various training programmes to enable me to be more efficient. This included IT training, Excel training, training on bundles, training on the printer/photocopier, training on attendance notes and on department-specific tasks. We have lots of other training schedules, professional and otherwise, lined up for the following year."
First year trainee, London
"I felt that there was occasionally a lack of direction and the emails organising it could sometimes arrive quite late."
Second year trainee, Reading
"There are monthly training meetings for my department as well as optional lunchtime seminars, a full week of IT and other training at the start. It's very comprehensive."
First year trainee, Guildford
"There's a four-day induction for the trainees at the beginning and then, every month or so, we have further training days. These are mostly useful and it's nice to see the other trainees from the different offices – it can involve a lot of travel though. I find the best way to learn is just to be in the office doing the work rather than training days, so they aren't my preference."
First year trainee, Basingstoke

2015

"When I first arrived, we had a monthly trainee day where all the trainees met up in London. This has now been reduced to quarterly, which is a bit disappointing, as I found it an effective way to learn, as well as a good social experience. The development and learning team ensure that soft skills are taught as well as legal training. Some elements of training were on relaxation and stress-reducing techniques in the workplace."
Second year trainee, Guildford
"Formal training took place in quarterly meetings to improve legal and non-legal skills such as: work management, mental attitude, networking, presentation and researching."
First year trainee, London
"The training massively depends on each individual department."
Second year trainee, London
"There are lots of internal training sessions on a variety of topics and we are encouraged to suggest topics for training if we think it should be included."
Second year trainee, Guildford

"Penningtons Manches gave us one solid week of induction before we started in our seats. Not only did it contain basic IT training, but also insightful talks from senior board members giving us an overview of the future plans for the firm."
First year trainee, London
"In training, we have regular seminars and presentations by barristers and consultants. You are given a lot of responsibility and are expected to learn non-legal skills quickly so as to deal with it."
Second year trainee, Oxford
"I have received a lot of informal training from my partners and associates. The more structured 'Trainees Thursday' seems to have been replaced by a quarterly meeting. CPD is encouraged even if it's not in a subject that my current department is involved in. If you can make a case for it, they are normally happy to send you."
Second year trainee, Guildford
"Penningtons Manches offers an excellent variety of training talks and workshops delivered by a good mix of internal and external course leaders. This includes both legal and non-legal skills, such as working in room role plays for business development and networking."
Second year trainee, Oxford
"When first joining we had training sessions once a month which was great and allowed us to meet up with the trainees in the other offices so as to get to know each other. Following the merger, all of the training was suspended for approximately eight months. It has now been re-instated on a quarterly basis; however, I don't feel I have picked up many useful non-legal skills due to the lack of training in my first year."
Second year trainee, Guildford
"Penningtons Manches training gives quarterly training days that cover all aspects from legal research to marketing."

"My confidence and client-care skills have massively improved."
First year trainee, Guildford
"There is training each month for trainees and gives everyone a chance to meet and catch up. The firm also regularly organises private training courses such as networking classes."
Second year trainee, Basingstoke
"Monthly trainee evenings and regular detailed departmental training."
First year trainee, London
"The training is incredible, with early responsibility and client contact. I heard horror stories from large London firms that all you do is make tea and coffee but Penningtons couldn't be further from that. I was allowed to liaise directly from clients from day one and once you had proven yourself capable in each department, partners were happy for you to give advice and prepare complicated documents, (though obviously these would be checked). The early client contact meant that I was ready for qualification as I was already used to giving advice on the phone and in person. My drafting skills have greatly improved as well but it is the client management which was the most important part of the training, and something I believe Penningtons to exceptionally well, (as I know of friends elsewhere who do the background work but are not allowed to speak to clients. How these people can be expected to suddenly learn how to interact with clients on qualification is beyond me)."
Newly qualified solicitor, Basingstoke
"Very good. Covers all bases. Regular internal and external training opportunities."
Second year trainee, London
"We have monthly training for trainees, with useful talks from partners/associates across the firm's departments. We also benefit from networking training and are encouraged to do as much BD as possible."
Second year trainee, Basingstoke
"They have bi-monthly meetings for trainees with take the form of seminars in which we are taught about specific areas of the practice or mentored in personal development."
Second year trainee, London
