Interview Process

2014

"My interview process was with legacy Manches. I first had an interview with the HR manager, followed by three separate partner interviews where I was interviewed by two partners each time."
First year trainee, London
"There was an assessment centre which included a HR interview and two written tasks. This was followed by a partner interview and a written task in the second round."
First year trainee, Reading
"The application involved a cover letter and the usual application form with competency questions."
Second year trainee, Oxford
"The interview process is comprehensive. It involved an assessment day, in-tray exercises, an online assessment test, a five minute presentation and an interview with a partner and HR."
First year trainee, Basingstoke
"I attended the vacation scheme which meant I didn't have a first round interview, but an assessment day was included within the vacation scheme. I had a second round interview with one member of HR and one partner where I had to give a presentation."
Second year trainee, Guildford

2013

"Competency based questions and questions based on the application form."
First year trainee, Guildford
"The firm only takes a limited number of trainees each year and so that is why competition for a training contract is strong."
Second year trainee, Basingstoke
"Candidates need to be knowledgeable and confident but the firm seems to focus on personality more than anything else. They look for people with strong communication and people skills as their view is that they can teach the law, to a certain extent, but the ability to work well with clients and colleagues is something you cannot teach as easily. In line with this, it is crucial that you show your real self at interview/on the vacation scheme as they want to see that you have a personality and that you are not scared of showing this at work. Clearly, you also need to show you have knowledge of the firm and what we are focussing on at the moment as well as some knowledge of any changes to the legal sector that will have an impact on the firm's business, (e.g. the introduction of ABS')."
Newly qualified solicitor, Basingstoke
"The first interview consisted of an hour's talk with two members of staff from HR/Graduate Recruitment. The second interview included a three minute presentation, a drafting exercise and a talk with an HR person and a partner local to the office in which the interview was held."
Second year trainee, Basingstoke
"In comparison with other firm the questions seemed very straightforward. They appeared to be more about my character/life and although in depth, also to be relatively informal. I feel they reflected the firm quite well."
Second year trainee, London
