You’ll be gaining first-hand experience of the vital role technology plays in our business, and building a compelling blend of technical and people skills that will prove invaluable in your career.
About the programmes
Within the Technology Solutions pathway you can apply to either our Technology programme or our Data & Analytics programme. Both these two year programmes are designed to equip you with the skills and experiences you’ll need to become a leading technology professional.
These programmes aren’t just about technology – they’re about the people who use it, the possibilities it creates, and how we work together to harness this potential.
The Technology programme covers a broad range of areas, from software design to systems architecture, and will see you working closely with teams throughout the function. Our Data & Analytics programme specifically focusses on the fast-evolving world of data. You’ll learn how we harness data across the bank and get involved with exciting projects on Big Data and the development of our Data Warehouse.
Both programmes have a starting salary of £27,000, depending on location. On top of your salary you’ll also have access to our flexible benefits package.
On both programmes you can look forward to:

After a full induction, each programme is structured around four, six month rotations, based in different areas of the function. The scale and diversity of RBS means you’ll benefit from an excellent range of placement options.
On completing the programme, we hope to see you join us in a permanent role. We’ll be advising you on career development throughout, but particularly during your last rotation we’ll focus on which roles you could step into next.
The Technology Solutions pathway is excellent preparation for a wide range of career paths, and some of the possible next roles to move into could include:
- Software Engineer
- Data Analyst
- Quality Analyst
We pride ourselves on the professional support we offer our graduates, and the friendly, down to earth community our graduates have shaped themselves.
Before you start, you’ll be paired with a ‘buddy’ (a graduate already on the programme) who’ll be there to help you get settled, answer any questions, and share their experiences.
You’ll also be assigned a Graduate Coach and a Placement Manager. Your Graduate Coach will be there to provide support throughout the programme, and will work with you to create a personal Capability Plan; your Placement Manager will provide rotation specific support, and will change with each placement. Together, they’ll help you reflect on your progress, develop your career, and build your professional network.

This will include meeting your buddy and support team, getting to know your fellow graduates, and taking part in an in-depth induction period, which will give you a broad understanding of how RBS works, our values, and our goals.
You’ll hear from leaders across our business and be brought up to speed on key topics like our customers, bank structure, entrepreneurship, risk and control, technology and digital innovation.
After the induction, you’ll begin your first rotation. You’ll be assigned a Placement Manager and team in Technology or Data & Analytics (depending on your programme) and be immersed in their work for 6 months.
For the remaining rotations you’ll have time to discuss options with your support team and apply to the areas that interest you. The final selection will depend on both your motivations and the business’ needs.
The overall aim of the rotation system is to give you exposure to the full breadth of work we do. So, wherever you go, variety is key.
As you progress through each rotation you’ll be able to take advantage of a comprehensive suite of learning and training options to develop the technical and business expertise you’ll need.
This will include completing a formal qualification and becoming proficient with a range of cutting edge technologies.
During the programme you’ll take part in a community project with a team of fellow graduates. This involves linking up with a charitable organisation and developing and delivering a solution to support their work.
You’ll have the chance to participate in a fund raising competition with other teams, and present your project to a panel of senior managers. It’s a great opportunity to contribute to a valuable cause and put your entrepreneurial skills to the test!
Future capability plan
In your final rotation you’ll discuss career plans with your support team, so you’ll be ready for the transition to a permanent role. The decisions you make here won’t be spur of the moment – they’ll be the result of long standing discussion, and a carefully crafted Future Capability Plan that runs throughout these programmes.
From start to finish, this plan will empower you to develop your talents and tailor your own learning journey, while covering the core themes which are central to our business’ success. It will form the basis of discussions with your support team, and incorporate formal and self-led learning.
For the Technology Programme you’ll need to be on course for, or already have achieved, a 2:2 or above; for Data & Analytics you’ll need to have, or be on course for, a 2:1.
For both programmes, we’ll be looking out for curious and inquisitive people, with a real passion for technology and the drive to explore how it can be used to make a positive difference for our customers.

In short, you’ll be something of an all-rounder – as comfortable solving technical problems as you are explaining concepts and thrashing out ideas with others.
