Private Banking Internship Programme

Take your first steps into a career in Private Banking, by joining one of our unique programmes - focused on relationship management, or investments and specialist advice.

About the programmes

Within the Private Banking pathway, we have three distinct internship options you can join us on. Relationship Management with Coutts, Relationship Management with Adam & Company, and our specialist Coutts Global Markets, Wealth & Investment Management programme.

All of these 10 week summer internships have been crafted specifically to give you direct experience of the work we do in Private Banking, our goals and our team culture.

Whichever brand within Private Banking you join, you’ll establish a network that will help you make an excellent start to your career. We’ll help you develop your skills so you’re able to deliver first class solutions for our clients. You’ll support us to provide high net worth clients with relationship support and understand their challenges.

On our third programme, Coutts Global Markets, Wealth & Investment Management you’ll be introduced to the financial markets at a high level, including portfolio management and construction. You’ll begin to develop a deep understanding of the specialist advice and services we provide, including trust and estate planning, philanthropy, wealth succession and protection.

On all programmes, you’ll be rewarded with a salary of £18,900 pro rata, depending on location.

All internships provide a great opportunity to:

  • Develop your skills, and build some new ones
  • Meet new people and grow your professional network
  • Deepen your understanding of private banking
  • Experience our team culture and values
  • Get stuck into a real life project and add value to the business
  • Gain valuable career experience, which will inspire your future career choices

For us, it’s also about finding and engaging with talented and passionate people like yourself, people who’ll make a difference to our business in the long term. That’s why if you complete the internship successfully, and enjoy the experience, there could be a place available for you on our 2019 Private Banking graduate programmes.

What you'll do

The internship starts with an induction. You’ll then begin a 10 week placement, where you’ll attend training workshops, get involved with our day to day work, and take part in a business improvement project with fellow interns.

In the last week you’ll be assessed against what you’ve learnt, where you’ll have the chance to reflect on and demonstrate this.

For the full 10 weeks, you’ll be paired with a ‘buddy’ and a line manager. Your buddy will be a current graduate, who’ll help you get settled and share their experience. Your line manager will provide guidance and support throughout the programme, discuss career options and help you grow your professional network.

For a fuller picture of how you’ll progress through the 10 weeks, check out the Learning Journey below.

Induction

During the induction period, you’ll learn about RBS, meet your fellow interns and have the chance to talk with colleagues, including senior leaders, from around our business. You’ll also be assigned a buddy and line manager, who’ll help you get acclimatised. Before then, you’ll have access to an on-boarding portal, which provides useful tips and advice.

As well as giving an overview of the bank, the induction will outline the goals of the programme, introduce you to our values and explain the work you’ll be involved in over the next 10 weeks. You’ll also learn about the training we’ll provide and how the programme is assessed.

Placement experience

Over the 10 weeks, you’ll be taking part in a business improvement project, linked to one area of Private Banking. You’ll find out about the specifics of this project during the Induction.

In teams, you’ll be tasked with finding a solution, or improvement in a specific area. This will give you the chance to complete research on a topic, work collaboratively, develop a business plan, and come up with recommendations for improvement or change to support our values. You’ll present on this, as a team, toward the end of the programme.

This will be a great way of putting new ideas forward, making a real contribution and getting a sense of what our team culture is really all about.

Community project

In addition to the business project, you’ll take part in a community fund-raising challenge. Working in teams, you’ll have a few weeks to create a business plan, with the goal of raising as much money as possible in one day of fund-raising activity for your team’s chosen charity. You’ll then put your plan into practice on the day.

Throughout the challenge, you’ll be supported by current RBS graduates. This isn’t a formally assessed element of the internships, but it’s a great opportunity to hone your skills, and have some fun, while contributing to a valuable cause.

Assessment

Toward the end of the internship, you’ll be assessed on what you’ve learned, against the goals and values explained in the induction. You’ll be keeping up a learning log, week by week, and you’ll be discussing progress with your line manager throughout.

In the penultimate week you’ll present, as a team, on the business improvement project you’ve been involved in, and you’ll also have an end of internship review. Complete these successfully, and you could be offered a place on our 2019 Private Banking graduate pathway.

From there you can carry the skills you’ve learned forward and take the next exciting step in your career.

About you

To be eligible for our internship programmes, you’ll need to be in your penultimate year of a university degree, and on course for a 2:1 or above.

You’ll also need sharp analytical skills, paired with an interest and dedication to self development.

You’ll have fantastic communication skills, both written and verbal, and a strong team work ethos. You’ll enjoy working with people, and a desire to learn when it comes to relationship management.
