Interview Process

2014

"The interview process comprises one interview with HR and a lawyer for the vacation scheme; one group assessment and one interview with two counsel/partners for the training contract."
First year trainee, London
"I had an initial interview, followed by an assessment day involving a second interview as well as group exercises such as a debate."

"The firm has, understandably, exacting standards for applicants. The training contract application featured online tests, online forms, an initial interview, assessment day and final interview."
First year trainee, London
"Application form, online testing, first round interview and then assessment centre. Similar to many other firms' procedures. I found the process very laid back, which wasn't always the case and was impressed with the feel I got straight away. I had personal phone calls rather than emails inviting me to progress beyond each stage which wasn't the case from many other firms."

"The recruitment process has changed substantially since I was recruited for the vacation scheme and training contract. There seems to be more structure before with regards to the assessment centre. It is my impression though that interviews remain relatively informal, particularly at the end of the vacation scheme where the consensus is that it is an opportunity to find out what has attracted applicants to working here, rather than an opportunity to give people a grilling on the intricacies of the financial markets or current deals (which was my experience at some other firms)."

2013

"Questions weren't too difficult, was asked about my motivations."
First year trainee, London
"Interview questions were both personal and commercial - I felt like the interview team were trying to get to know me a bit, as well as getting a feel for how I thought about things and what levels of interest in the commercial world I had. The interview process felt open and friendly."
Second year trainee, London
"The usual questions - motivation to be a commercial lawyer, questions about me as a person and my experience, etc. Nothing out of the ordinary. The first stage was a chat with a partner and a member of HR - very gentle. The second stage was an assessment centre where six interviewees come together for a group exercise, and a further interview with a couple of partners."
First year trainee, London
"Much more CV-specific than some interviews - really picked up on what I had done/said in my application and asked me about these things, on top of the usual why law, why the firm, etc."
First year trainee, London
"Very straightforward interviews and a team work based assessment. I was asked the typical "why us" questions, as well as what I thought I could bring to the table as a trainee, and what challenges I think junior lawyers face. The process is simple, but the competition is fierce."
