Interview Questions

2016

"What changes do you think the growth in renewables will have on the energy sector?"
First year trainee, London
"In my interview with a partner and HR, I was asked questions about how I have displayed leadership and the most important qualities for effective teamwork. My final interview with two partners followed my CV closely, and I was asked to expand on a few areas. I was also asked why I didn't go into business instead of law and why I wanted to join the firm."
Second year trainee, London
"I was asked about current affairs and what my interest was in this firm in particular. I was also asked about my experiences (eg previous law work, university clubs/societies). Questions were unstructured and didn't feel regimented. Interviewers' dialogue encouraged me to introduce topics I had prepared and wanted to talk about, which seemed more fair than expecting broader commercial knowledge from a fairly inexperienced university student."
Second year trainee, London
"I was asked about my previous work experience, why I wanted to be a lawyer, what aspects of my degree I found interesting, which ones I didn't, why Shearman & Sterling."
First year trainee, London

2015

"Questions included: Why this firm? And what interests you about the work? I was also asked about current affairs and my opinion of something controversial that was happening at the time."
First year trainee, London
"I was asked how I see my career going, what my largest challenges have been to date, and what is a recent deal which has interested me."
Second year trainee, London
"My first interview was quite informal so we had a conversation about my degree and what my interests were, etc. The second interview was an assessment day with a written exercise and a group exercise, as well as a more formal interview that mainly tested commercial awareness."
First year trainee, London
"Focus was on one piece of unique work experience I had done in an in-house legal department. I was also asked, because I had done a lot of things that may indicate a wish to join the Bar, what I would do if I was Julian Assange's lawyer?"
First year trainee, London
"I was asked: Why do you want to be a lawyer instead of an investment banker if you like the idea of working on big transactions?"
Second year trainee, London
"Why do you want to work for Shearman & Sterling? What do you want to pursue a career in law, having studied a social science at university?"
First year trainee, London

2014

"I was asked: why Shearman? Why law? Favourite animal? What did you enjoy during the vacation scheme? What are the challenges currently facing the legal profession?"
Second year trainee, London
"The interview was very much tailored to my CV/application and I was asked to discuss and expand on various things in this, as well as answer usual questions such as why law/why Shearman & Sterling?"
Second year trainee, London
"Questions included: what would I be doing if I hadn't chosen to apply for law? Why did I choose to apply to a US firm in London? Where else had I applied?"
First year trainee, London
"Why law/Shearman & Sterling, etc. Tell us about recent deals the firm has been involved in. General discussions about topics in the media at that time - the London riots, potential war in Libya, etc."
First year trainee, London
"Why law? Why Shearman & Sterling? What have you enjoyed about the vacation scheme? Extra-curricular activities questions. Where else have you applied and why? What is your favourite animal and why?"
Second year trainee, London
"What do you think is an important characteristic in a lawyer? Can you give an example of where you have worked in a team."
First year trainee, London
