What is PACO?

  • PACO engineers work across the full range of Shell sites including Upstream (Onshore and Offshore), Integrated Gas, Downstream manufacturing and in Engineering Centres Globally.
  • PACO engineers design, operate and maintain Process Automation systems using a variety of technologies for the following areas.                               
  • Basic Process Control Systems
  • Safety Instrumented Systems
  • Programmable Logic Controllers
  • Field Instrumentation
  • Analysers systems
  • Metering Systems
  • Fire and Gas Detection Systems
  • Alarm Management Systems

Our Programme in Process Automation, Control and Optimisation (PACO) Engineering:

  • Initially working in Shell Upstream you could work on a range of projects and operations that have a real impact on our business. For example, you could get the chance to use your skills and knowledge in Process Control, Instrumentation and automations systems to maximise production, ensure fiscal metering / custody transfer accuracy and maintain quality in oil and gas production facilities while at the same time ensuring that safety and environmental requirements are always met. You can make a vital contribution to the efficient operation and design of oil and gas operating facilities.

You’ll experience a dynamic and challenging environment on the Shell Graduate Programme ranging from Concept Projects to Decommissioning Platforms (where no two days are the same).

Typical roles & responsibilities in the PACO discipline include:

  • Day-to-day instrumentation and control engineering support (site or office based)
  • Engineering design of instrumentation and process control systems for new (greenfield) facilities
  • or modifications to existing (brownfield) facilities.
  • Analysing the performance of equipment, optimizing the design / performance  and implementing design changes as required.
  • Applying process control techniques optimise production and or quality.
  • Managing and Improving process safety systems .
  • Ensuring that Instrumentation and control maintenance and testing is thorough and robust to ensure that facility production uptime and safety requirements are met.
  • Failure analysis and investigation either within the PACO discipline on simple systems or working closely with other disciplines in a multidiscipline team on complex systems or equipment packages.
  • Managing contracts for engineering or maintenance support related to operating facilities
  • First-hand involvement on cutting-edge projects places pioneering graduates like you in challenging positions so you can make your mark within your team and the organisation as a whole.

Your background:

  • This programme particularly suits graduates with a background and interest in Process Control, Process Automation, Instrumentation and Control, Mechatronics or Electrical / Electronics engineering.
  • You should have obtained a minimum of a Bachelors degree in Engineering or be studying towards a Masters degree.

The application process for our graduate programmes is rigorous, but is designed to enable the most talented graduates to stand out.  After submitting an online application, you will be invited to

complete our online assessments and our on-demand interview. Successful candidates will be invited to final stage of the selection process in a virtual assessment. This virtual assessment consists of

two parts: a case study for which you will be asked to prepare a presentation (the case study will be shared with you in advance); and an interview, where you will have the chance to get to know us,

and we can get to know you. To make the interview process more convenient and comfortable, we are leveraging the latest digital technology to bring the experience to you, wherever you may be.

Through this process we will be assessing candidates’:
