"The best thing about the firm. I started here as a case handler after university and was encouraged to apply to be a trainee as well. Teams sit together in the office and this helps group work. The office is very social with at least a couple of events happening every month outside the office."
First year trainee, Edinburgh
"Everyone is friendly, approachable, down-to-earth, and sitting open plan makes for a great working environment."
Second year trainee, Milton Keynes
"There is no real hierarchy; everybody is approachable and engaging. There's a good level of social activities and people are genuinely recruited based on the values of the firm. There aren't many, if any, egos. Trainees are involved in client events and encouraged to run events whenever the chance arises."
First year trainee, Nottingham
"A good balance. Expected to work hard when under pressure."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes / London
"The culture of the firm feels very non-hierarchical. The hierarchy is obviously there, but not in a way that feels oppressive to those at the bottom. Relationships between colleagues feel relaxed and everyone is very willing to lend a hand when needed. Socialising occurs when possible, but can be difficult as most people drive to get to my particular office."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes

2015

"In terms of culture, there is a non-hierarchical, open-plan environment. A cohesive team focus exists and there is an emphasis on working cross-department and cross office. Regular office drinks events are held, as well as smaller, more informal gatherings among colleagues."
Second year trainee, Reading
"There is a good team spirit at Shoosmiths, and I would not say that there is a hierarchy in place."
Second year trainee, Southampton
"I have generally been able to speak to anybody at any level, and I feel like everyone looks after each other. There is good teamwork too."
First year trainee, Southampton
"There is no obvious hierarchy at Shoosmiths. The open-plan offices enhance the team environment, as trainees, solicitors, associates and partners all sit together. I have felt able to ask questions throughout my training contract so far and was warmly welcomed in each of my seats and to the firm."
First year trainee, Southampton
"There's no hierarchy at all here, but teams work well together and there is cross-department working too. As well as this, there is lots of after work socialising where we get to meet everyone in the office."
First year trainee, Reading

2014

"The firm as a fantastic work/life balance. Whilst there is a hierarchy/structure, the open plan office style enables colleagues to sit amongst people of all levels. Additionally, all levels of staff are very friendly and approachable, making it a great environment to work in."
Second year trainee, Milton Keynes
"The learning environment at Shoosmiths is great. It's an open-plan office environment, so there is opportunity to learn from everyone, including partners. No one sits away in an office on their own so everyone is encouraged to contribute to the team, both professionally and socially."
Second year trainee, Reading
"I think that the culture is structured but there are no private offices, so partners, associates, PAs, paralegals, etc. all work alongside each other. There are quite a lot of after-work socials organised by the social committee, as well as impromptu drinks or treats if the team has been working particularly hard."
First year trainee, Manchester
"Teamwork is a huge focus at Shoosmiths. There is complete visibility throughout the structure and you will often work closely with the partners in your departments. The social side of work is another thing that is great, and the City centre location makes after work drinks a common activity."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"Shoosmiths is a very meritocratic firm where hard work is recognised. I don't feel that there is a hierarchy - my thoughts as a trainee are welcomed by senior members of the firm and are valued. I work in a very close team, and we all pull together to achieve the right result for our clients. The social life is good too, with regular drinks after work as well as work organised events."
Second year trainee, Milton Keynes
"There is a non-hierarchical culture at the firm and all of the offices are open-plan, and everybody at the firm is friendly and approachable. There is also a good work/life balance in my opinion."
First year trainee, Manchester
"People are very friendly, and there is support when you need it, but you are also given your own responsibilities. Socialising can be more difficult in the Southampton office because of it being on a business park, but the trainees get together quite often."
First year trainee, Southampton
"The firm has a great ethos where there is no pressure to be in the office if it is not needed. There is also a good social life outside of work. The lack of hierarchy and approachability of partners means that I feel like a valued and important member of each team as a trainee."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"Everyone here is really approachable and there are no barriers between people of different levels; I feel like a valuable, respected member of the team. Trainees get together quite regularly, and we also have lots of charity and networking events with members from ours and other firms."
First year trainee, Reading

2013

"There are lots of office socials and my team go out for drinks regularly."
Newly qualified solicitor, Birmingham
"No hierarchy, everyone is approachable and happy to help with queries. Bit quiet after-work, but then this is Milton Keynes."
Second year trainee, Milton Keynes
"The firm has a fantastic culture. This morning I came in to an Easter egg from the firm! As a whole the firm is very non-hierarchical with all our offices open plan. Everybody in the firm is friendly and will make time to answer any questions (no matter how minor!). The small group of trainees in each office means there is a lot of informal socialising as well as organised events. The whole office also has monthly pay-day drinks."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"Teamwork is very important at Shoosmiths. Practice groups work together to deliver the expertise and advice that our clients need. The firms culture is grounded in having a good work/life balance. There isn't an expectation to sit at your desk till all hours to 'be seen' to be there working. If there is work to be done then yes you might not get out the door at 6:00pm but very late nights are few and far between and only when it's really necessary."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes
"The hours at the office are generally good and although on occasions I have had to work long hours, I have always felt that this has been appreciated. There is very little hierarchy and I feel as happy talking to the Head of Office as I do trainees."
Second year trainee, Southampton
"Excellent work/life balance, real lack of visible hierarchy and good team focus in most departments. Social life can be a bit limited as most people don't live in Reading."
Second year trainee, Reading
