(based on 8 ratings in 2016)

2016

"I am currently in real estate and often have contact with clients by email and phone, although it is rarer to sit in on meetings at the moment. Day-to-day I can be drafting, making reports on title for clients, conducting research, registering documents and completing tax returns."
First year trainee, Edinburgh
"I have had a lot of interaction, including three client secondments."
Second year trainee, Milton Keynes
"Excellent level of client interaction, which is actively encouraged wherever possible. Elements of matters are compartmentalised to allow autonomy over your own workload."
First year trainee, Nottingham
"Little client interaction in my current team, but good exposure to work. I'm allowed to get on with my work. My views are respected and challenged."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes / London
"Good amount of client contact. In my previous seat I managed a dozen (basic) litigation matters in addition to supporting the rest of the team, so got used to managing workloads. This is less so in my current seat but that's due to the different nature of the work here. Research and basic drafting tasks are frequent. Some admin-esque work (bundling, copying, etc) but this does not take up too much of my time."

"I have had opportunities to build rapport with clients and become first port of call on smaller files and ancillary matters. My excellent levels of responsibility at work have been matched with support and feedback."
Second year trainee, Reading
"I have lots of client interaction and I am trusted to run files independently."
Second year trainee, Southampton
"My day-to-day responsibilities are varied, and I have a good level of client interaction at trainee level: I am included on calls, taken to meetings, and have direct email and letter interaction."
First year trainee, Southampton
"Client contact varies on which seat you are in, but I have generally had great exposure to clients and completed high level work."
First year trainee, Southampton
"I have had huge amounts of client interaction from day one at work."
First year trainee, Reading

2014

"As a trainee we are given real responsibility from day one, whilst having that supervision and guidance where necessary. My training contract has involved real work and I have had great exposure to clients, dealing with them directly under partner supervision."
Second year trainee, Milton Keynes
"As a trainee at Shoosmiths, you are actively encouraged to interact with clients on a regular basis. For example, my first seat was in Real Estate, I had my own files and was regularly dealing with partners and associates on the other side of the transactions. I was always fully supported by my supervisor but I was encouraged to take the lead in negotiations and handled the files myself."
Second year trainee, Reading
"I mainly deal with admin and project work, and there is a lot of client contact for this level. Day-to-day work normally comprises of managing my current caseload, and completing drafting or research tasks for various people in the office."
First year trainee, Manchester
"Dependant on the department you work in there is usually only one trainee meaning you get involved in all of the most interesting work, whilst being supported by a large team. Client interaction can be commonplace where you handle your own small files (real estate for example) but you still get huge exposure in all departments."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"Trainees have a high level of responsibility from early on if you show you are capable; and the same for client interaction."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"I am regularly in contact with our clients and am able to play an active role in every deal that comes to the team. I am given the opportunity to test myself daily and have enjoyed the amount of deal experience gained throughout my training."
Second year trainee, Milton Keynes
"I have been given great quality work for household name clients and have been trusted to have day-to-day contact (email and telephone) with CEO's, FD's, IHL's, etc. I have also run conference calls for a large blue-chip client."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"I've experienced high levels of interaction with clients (always supervised - so no fear of being left to deal with issues unaided). We have a very supportive team network and I am entrusted with drafting documents, undertaking research tasks and generally assisting the team on any given transaction."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes

2013

"I get a good amount of client exposure with the opportunity to run matters myself."
Newly qualified solicitor, Birmingham
"Trainees get a decent level of 'proper' work and client contact. It's not all photocopying and making tea (although the latter always goes down well!)."
Second year trainee, Milton Keynes
"I like the research and exposure to files that I have but I would like more guidance with this."
First year trainee, Edinburgh
"Trainees at Shoosmiths are offered City quality work and clients with a much more supportive and friendly culture. Trainees are given a high level of responsibility from an early stage and are able to have good levels of client contact. However, this is always accompanied by fantastic support and guidance ensuring that you never feel out of your depth."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes
"The work is interesting and I have been given a fairly good level of responsibility. At times there has not been enough to do."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes
"Each team is relatively small meaning I have been heavily involved in matters from the start. I have also had a lot of client interaction, both in work and at social events. Within my first few weeks I was running a number of my own files."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"This depends on which team you are working with and business needs but the firm is keen for you to be fully involved with providing advice."
First year trainee, Milton Keynes
"This varies from department to department and the kind of work that is available but I have invariably found that if there is an opportunity to get you involved in high quality work and 'give it a go' in producing first drafts of documents before discussion then you are given the chance. Client contact is also actively encouraged."
Second year trainee, Reading
