"The supervisors are our first point of contact and will take the time to go through the work they present us with, as well as the individual matters they are involved in. Partners and other associates are also incredibly approachable and happy to explain where further explanations are desired."

"There is a very real open-door policy at my firm and people are very happy to give feedback both formally through appraisals and informally if you ask for it. Most importantly, people will always praise you for good work that you have done."
Second year trainee, London
"People are accessible at all levels and do generally appear to create time to explain tasks and business context."

"My supervisor is very nice and a good mentor, but I don't see much evidence of a formal programme in place for mentorship."
First year trainee, London
"There is no mentoring programme, but most partners are very accessible. We work closely with our supervisors who (in my experience) have been good mentors, but sometimes the quantity of work means feedback goes by the wayside."

"Lawyers seem very accessible. Partners also feel accessible but obviously to a lesser extent than the associates. They make good mentors (always happy to give advice) and exposure and proximity to their workings is good training besides doing the work itself."
Second year trainee, London
"Everyone is prepared to offer help and feedback and there are internal procedures to assign mentors to everyone. This is generally good and well executed."

"I feel I have been very well-supervised. The feedback that you receive is useful and constructive and aimed to help you improve. I have also received praise when working hard on deals, which always makes you feel acknowledged for the hard work."
Second year trainee, London
"Everyone is very approachable and the partners are willing to answer questions you may have about the transaction you're working on or their specialisms in general. Sometimes feedback can be a bit slow, so it is the job of the trainee who wants feedback to make sure they chase for it."

"Most of the lawyers are very open and some of the partners operate 'open-door' policies. The associates are very helpful with advice and are willing to help trainees with concerns where possible. The fact that Sidley has dedicated support lawyers means there is a further avenue for getting advice or expressing concerns."
First year trainee, London
"It would be nice to get more formal sessions with the mentors. Some supervisors are not as likely to provide feedback as others."
First year trainee, London
"The firm could roll out the mentoring scheme to trainees; this is currently the preserve of associates."
Second year trainee, London
"Everyone I have worked with has been a fairly good mentor. If you ask for feedback on a piece of work you will generally be given thorough, constructive feedback. If you have done a good piece of work, people will generally let you know."
First year trainee, London
"I have been lucky to have a series of very good mentors and supervisors. Others generally are very approachable, even when busy."
Second year trainee, London

"I receive regular feedback on my work from my supervisor and partner in charge. Both the partners and the associates take time in explaining what it is they expect from me."
First year trainee, London
"Training on-the-job happens daily. I have received lots of on-going feedback and where there has not been feedback provided, I have simply asked for feedback and feel comfortable doing so given the good working relationship there is between partners and associates in general."

"The mentoring and informal training at Sidley is excellent. All supervisors take an interest in the development of their trainees and take the time to explain aspects of the work that are challenging."
