Interview Questions

2016

"I was asked a lot about myself and the answers I had put on my application. I was asked to give a status update on my commercial awareness question response. I was also asked a lot about my previous work experience, both legal and non-legal."
Second year trainee, London
"I just applied directly for a training contract, so my interview focused on me as a person and what my hobbies were – also my suitability as a potential trainee. I was asked about a story that was current at the time: it was the story about a monkey that stole someone's camera and took a selfie, which Wikipedia then used for one of its articles and the photographer sued alleging a breach of intellectual property rights (quirky stories can make good interview questions)."
First year trainee, London
"A mix of CV questions and more difficult commercial questions. I was asked about the Argentinian bond crisis and how I would negotiate depending on what party I was representing."
First year trainee, London

2015

"I was asked a number of technical questions - e.g. what was my opinion on the state of securitisation market. I was also asked a number of questions more aimed at soft skills - e.g. my career ambitions, past university studies, which seats most interested me, and my hobbies."
First year trainee, London
"I was asked Why Sidley? As well as questions on previous work experiences. They also wanted to know why I was not going for other careers."
First year trainee, London
"I was asked about my work experience so far as well as some general commercial questions in relation to current affairs."
First year trainee, London
"I was asked a lot of questions about my previous work experiences including non-law related work experience. I was asked about the commercial story of interest I wrote in my application form to confirm I had been following up on this story. I was also asked about my responses in my application form so it is important to ensure you read your application form before the interview."
First year trainee, London
"There were questions about me, my interests, my degree; commercial awareness questions; and questions about my interest in law."
First year trainee, London
"Questions about myself - when have I demonstrated leadership, teamwork, perseverance, how do I handle authority (especially when I think the person delegating is incorrect). For me there were no commercial-based questions, it was all very much based on my application - my dissertation, subjects at university, my hobbies and skills."
First year trainee, London
"I was asked a lot about my CV, extra-curricular activities, some situational judgement questions and some questions to test my general interest in working for a corporate law firm."
Second year trainee, London
