"I'm fairly satisfied, although the firm only has a few paralegals so sometimes you may find yourself doing paralegal-level work."

"Sidley trainees receive the perfect amount of responsibility. The work that we are assigned is not menial and it has true value to the client and to the firm. There are only 10 to 15 trainees each year so we take on a lot of valuable work."

"The quality of the work varies. As you build trust, people give you more challenging things to do. My day-to-day role can vary from doing admin tasks to looking at complex documents and trying to decipher what certain clauses mean. There is no typical day, which is the best part!"
Second year trainee, London
"Work varies by department but my general experience has been of helping associates (especially at the junior end) with work that would legitimately be their own (ie of a level that is interesting and challenging). There are very few occasions when I have been asked to do mundane work."

"I'm very satisfied with the work as the small intake means that most of the work assigned to us really feels needed for the functioning of the firm. Most of what I do is drafting and research based and it never feels frivolous or like a waste of time. Being a US firm, the sizes of transactions might be smaller than traditional Magic Circle firms, but they tend to be more complex and interesting, in my opinion."

"While the work has varied from seat to seat, it has nonetheless been very interesting and varied. As well as typical trainee tasks such as due diligence, bibling and proofreading documents, I have also been tasked with complicated bits of research and was given the opportunity to provide the first draft of a loan agreement for a pro bono matter I worked on. I have also been tasked with drafting various corporate ancillary documents and assisted on managing the completion of a joint venture project."

"You get given a good level of work. Yes, the quality fluctuates but generally you do get given a good variety of work and a good level of responsibility."
Second year trainee, London
"The quality of work is excellent and we are given a lot of responsibility."

"There's the odd administrative task but overall it's good quality and important work."

"I've worked on legal research and drafting correspondence as well as managing documents and drafting filings."

"For the most part there are plenty of opportunities for client contact. The low ratio of partners to associates means that on many matters you work directly with a partner, which leads to a good quality of work."
Second year trainee, London
"I have had a lot of very interesting and varied work. I've also had quite a lot of direct client interaction through emails and phone calls. My day-to-day responsibilities have varied in my different seats, but have included case management, drafting, proof reading, legal updates etc."
First year trainee, London
"Good level of client interaction, interesting work, ability to draft advice emails or interesting articles on certain areas of law. Good exposure to drafting contracts and other documents."
Second year trainee, London
"Client interaction varies: I had quite a lot in my first seat but less in my present seat. Day-to-day responsibilities vary also – from drafting documents to article writing to bibling to research."
First year trainee, London
"In my first seat, I had quite a lot of client contact in one transaction in particular. Responsibilities have included drafting board minutes, filing documents, preparing research notes, liaising with local counsel on various matters and due diligence."

"First seat I had a great deal of responsibility, did a lot of drafting and had client contact. Second seat feels more commoditised and have done little drafting and had little client contact."
First year trainee, London
"The work you do depends on the seat, the clients and how busy you are. Some clients don't like trainees to be present, some are happy to get you involved. The higher the level of the work, the less likely you are to be involved of course."
First year trainee, London
"I have been given a lot of responsibility so far; drafting emails to clients, participating in conference calls with clients and attending meetings."
First year trainee, London
"I have had quite good client interaction although that is probably unusual. On the whole, if the work permits access to clients then it is there for the taking. More often than not though, it doesn't lend itself to such access."
Second year trainee, London
"I am given quite a lot of responsibility from emailing clients directly to being given the first draft of various documents. Although you do not meet clients in person very often I do communicate with them on a regular basis via email or telephone."
First year trainee, London
"I have had good client contact as I was on secondment in my first seat. Day-to-day responsibilities include liaising with counsel, carrying out due diligence on clients, making trips to companies house and the courts (depending on your department), attending meetings with clients, etc."

"As a trainee, I have been tasked with drafting various documents, including employments contracts, termination letters, compromise agreements and service agreements. I have also had an excellent amount of client contact and have attended client meetings."
First year trainee, London
"Good level of responsibility from the get go. In my particular seat not too much client interaction. Work is extremely varied. The job is pretty demanding and challenging, but you do a lot more compared to trainees at the same level in other firms."
First year trainee, London
"The small size of the teams means that in terms of career development it permits early responsibility and enables exposure to a healthy diet of varied work. Opportunities to attend more client meetings would be welcomed."
Newly qualified solicitor, London
"Good client interaction, lots of responsibility and independence."
