"This depends on the discipline that you are in but, if there is the possibility of being promoted, then hard graft, innovation and initiative are generally the key things management look for. You must also be seen to work well with others and have emotional intelligence."

However, oversight is always provided from senior engineers so you are never quite dropped in at the deep end. There is such a broad range of projects going on within the company that it would be easy to stay for most/all of your career and not get bored of doing the same things every week."
