Graduate Developer

About Sparx

Here at Sparx we're using a scientific and research-based approach that takes the guesswork out of education. Through data and real-world classroom observation, we're investigating what makes the best learning experience in order to improve educational outcomes for students, today and tomorrow.

Our platform for Maths uses custom-built content and a powerful, data-driven web and mobile framework to deliver a tailored set of exercises, games and incentives that are redefining the limits of what young people can achieve.

We’re looking for people with a real passion for education and a belief in the power of technology to improve it; people who want a challenge and people who want to make a difference.

Job description

As a Graduate Developer at Sparx, you’ll be an integral part of the team from day one, joining our team of highly skilled software developers. You’ll be supporting the development of the technical framework of the Sparx system. You’ll get to see software you’ve helped program go live in the classroom, gaining instant feedback in order to make continuous improvement, whilst always considering the bigger picture.

Things happen at breakneck speed at Sparx and you’ll need to think creatively to help the team get from A to B. Our work is ever evolving so you’ll have plenty of opportunities to make your mark and take on increasing responsibility as time goes on.

Our technology stack is constantly adapting as we pick the right tools for the job, but you should expect to be working with web, server and native technologies such as Angular, React, Redux, Immutable.js, Pixi.js, Less, Django, Nginx, Postgres, Sqlite and RabbitMQ, in languages including JavaScript, Python, Objective C, C++ and Lua, on iOS, Linux (Debian) and OS X platforms.

About you

Working quickly and collaboratively comes naturally to you and you’ll be eager to learn from the dynamic and diverse team around you. You love working minute-by-minute to solve new and complex problems that may take months to completely understand, and have the conviction that your skills can help shape a truly transformative educational experience.

You’ll have or are predicted to achieve a minimum of a 2:1 in Computer Science, Maths or other relevant and technical discipline. You’ll be confident working with programming languages – be it Python, C++, JavaScript, Objective C, etc. - but you’ll also be a quick enough learner to be able to teach yourself whatever is required to do the best job.

Our team

We’re about living life, not putting it on hold. Our generous benefits include substantial holiday leave and the chance to join our company pension. We have a range of on-site facilities for all employees to use free of charge. On site we have a netball court, a five-a-side football pitch, a running track, a pool table, an Olympic table tennis table, as well as an on-site gym with classes throughout the day. Our café serves delicious, local organic food. Did we mention it’s all free? On top of this you’ll have great views from your office window of the foothills of Dartmoor and boats out at sea on the horizon, with the beach just 20 minutes away. Plus, we’re constantly organising events and activities to support our charities, and to socialise. Our work is serious but we’re all about having fun while we do it!
