Graduate Accelerator Physicist

The STFC’s Rutherford Appleton Laboratory is home to several of the UK’s largest national science facilities. One of these – the ISIS Neutron and Muon Source – is based around a powerful proton accelerator. The accelerator operates 24 hours a day and is a machine comprised of 25000 components that must work reliably together. The Low Energy Beams Group is responsible for the front end of this machine, which starts with the ion source. The ion source has a thriving and exciting R&D program to understand and improve its performance for ISIS operations and future accelerator projects. The group also works on a wide range of accelerator projects for other national labs and industry.
SUMMARY OF KEY DUTIES
The successful candidate will become a world expert in particle accelerators. They will design, purchase, build, operate and experiment on a wide variety of accelerator systems. Their duties will include computational design and simulations, laboratory experiments and communicating results internationally. They will also be expected to help the team operate and maintain the ion source.
• Plan and carry out laboratory experiments.
• Perform computational simulations to understand, improve or design new accelerator components.
• Operate and maintain a wide variety of laboratory equipment.
• Design new experimental components, liaise with manufacturers and purchase new items.
• Write computer programmes for data acquisition and analysis.
• Present technical reports and papers both internally and to international collaborators.
• Professionally represent STFC’s work to the public, key stakeholders and international partners.
EXPERIENCE, KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS REQUIRED
• A high level of competence in manipulating Maxwell’s equations of electricity and magnetism.
• An understanding of broad physics principles including particle physics, quantum mechanics, lasers, Fermi-Dirac statistics and optics.
• Basic knowledge of electronic circuit design.
• Experience with computer programming.
• Ability to work individually and in a team to solve practical problems.
• Imagination and flexibility, with a willingness to try new things.
• Experience working with your hands; for example building intricate objects, metalworking, soldering.
