Interview Questions

2016

"I had a short commercial case-study, but my second interview was more chatty and focused on interesting items I'd listed on my CV."
Second year trainee, London
"General questions about myself and why I wanted to work at S&C. Commercial questions such as what fields I would invest in at the moment."
Second year trainee, London
"I was asked about my hobbies and interests, how I was finding university, what interesting stories I'd recently read in the news, why I wanted to pursue a career in law, and why Sullivan & Cromwell."
First year trainee, London
"I was asked to discuss my CV and how the skills I have picked up on my non-law degree (and in previous non-legal work experience) would transfer to a successful training contract. I was also asked some general questions on commercial awareness, which involved one partner taking out a copy of the Financial Times and we discussed a few of the headlines. It sounds daunting but it was actually a really interesting chat, and much more enjoyable from a candidate's perspective than typical interview questions."
First year trainee, London
"The interviews tend to be quite informal at S&C and often feel more like a conversation with a partner than a traditional interview would. Be relaxed and be yourself, the recruitment team are as much trying to figure out if you would fit well within the firm as they are trying to see if you are qualified to work for the firm."

2015

"There was a case-study which was quite technical and then some other general, commercial awareness-type questions as well as some questions about myself."
Second year trainee,
"I was asked several commercial awareness type questions during my interview."
First year trainee,
"I was asked fairly standard questions that led to a more chatty two-way conversation than a typical interview. For example, I was asked: What are your hobbies? Why S&C? etc."
First year trainee,
"I was given a short M&A case study to read, which I then discussed with one of the partners. I was also asked about current market conditions. However, the majority of the interview consisted of a discussion about me and my interests."
Second year trainee,
