Graduate Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) Analyst, IS – National Grid

About You

  • You must have, or be predicted to gain, a 2:2 degree classification or above in the one of the following subjects: STEM and Computer Science degree.
  • This programme consists of rotational placements and therefore you must be willing to relocate as and when the programme requires.

About the Role

You can put your knowledge of computer languages and operations to find and fix problems in large computer networks, such as network communications errors, storage problems, and malfunctioning server platforms on the Critical National Infrastructure (CNI) Graduate Programme. The grid that runs the UK’s gas and electricity flow is a core part of our business and integral to UK plc. You will be working with many teams that support these key systems; specialising in diagnosing and solving problems in the complex, innovative, reliable and secure technology that empowers National Grid in a fast-changing energy industry.

Key Tasks and Areas of Work

You will be based in the CNI team whose role is to ensure that our systems enable National Grid to ‘keep the lights on’. The CNI team support all systems used by the Control Rooms to manage gas and electricity around the UK.

You could be working with any of the following teams:

  • Monitoring – looking after our critical systems and monitoring activity in the control rooms
  • Asset health – making sure our systems remain fit for purpose
  • Applications – working with team looking after the applications in the control rooms
  • Infrastructure – looking after the underlying platforms which support our applications

Being an analytical thinker with a passion for challenges and problem solving, you’ll be good at working with all of the above teams and can respond well to crisis.


Working in the IS department means you could be working with third party suppliers or National Grid business users. The role that technology plays is wide reaching and touches every working person every day. You will be working with people that look after the systems that support the critical role that National Grid plays in the UK energy market, not just for energy delivery today, but into the future.
