Satisfaction with Work

8.5 / 10

(based on 8 ratings in 2018)

2018

"The responsibility afforded to trainees inevitably varies between departments and fee earners. That said, I have felt very satisfied with the responsibility I have been given across my four seats. Client contact (meetings, calls, emails) is the norm and trainees are welcomed at all client events. Trainees are given tasks such as drafting key documents, memoranda of advice, liaising with clients, attending meetings with clients/counsel and attending key meetings."

"All the seats I have completed so far have given me a genuinely high level of responsibility and a range of tasks that I can get stuck into. I am trusted to manage my own workflow and chase the work that I find most rewarding."
First year trainee, London
"This has significantly improved in my second seat in terms of the responsibility I am given and my ability to run small matters on my own."
First year trainee, London
"The quality of work that you are given as a trainee is impressive. While there is an element of admin that is simply innate to the profession, I am always getting involved with client calls and meetings and often have direct dialogue with the clients. I always feel as though I have a high level of responsibility, but have the necessary support to manage that."

"This varies by department. Some are more exciting and provide more responsibility due to the nature of the work. The seats I have enjoyed the most involve a lot of client contact, responsibility for smaller matters/parts of bigger matters and complex multi-disciplinary or jurisdictional transactions."

"It is generally quite varied. Obviously, all seats have certain tasks and work that may be more common, but there is a conscious effort to ensure involvement in all types of work within a department. Similarly, some seats generally have less purely 'legal' work available at trainee level due to the nature of the work itself. However, even then, it's encouraged that purely administrative tasks are delegated to ensure the work is as interesting as possible."

"I get involved in a range of tasks and benefit from really good supervision. I feel I can ask questions and discuss issues with the team members and there is also a lot of training offered by each department. I work with the majority of team members, which allows me to learn more, discover my interests and enjoy varied work."

"The quality of work varies significantly but generally gets better over the course of a seat as you gain experience and the trust of colleagues who give you more work."
Second year trainee, London
"Very satisfied. I am given a lot of tasks that require me to think critically, commercially and legally. I am fully involved with key parts of the overall work."
First year trainee, London
"Trainees are given real responsibility on high-profile matters at an early stage but are also given top-notch training to allow them to thrive."
First year trainee, London
"Most work given has been interesting and with high levels of responsibility. However, there can be quieter times when there is a lack of work for trainees."

"Varies from department to department. In my current department there's not much work and a lot of it is admin/process driven but in other seats I have had really good-quality work with a high level of responsibility and learning."
Second year trainee, London
"I'm very satisfied with the work that I'm assigned. We receive a high level of responsibility early on and so get to deal with some complex and interesting pieces of work."
First year trainee, London
"My current department is a little quiet over the summer but the work in my first department was great."
First year trainee, London
"As you move through the training contract you are given more responsibility and given a higher level of work. Even so, from the first seat you are given high-quality work, often on a par with junior associates."
Second year trainee, London
"My department includes more administration than I would like but it's far outweighed by the amount of stimulating work I am given."
First year trainee, London
"This varies from department to department. In some teams I have been given a lot of responsibility and in some I have spent much of my time bundling."
Second year trainee, London
"I am assigned a good variety of work by many different members of the team. While there is inevitably some admin work, most work I get is high quality and allows you to think for yourself and make the most of your legal education."
Second year trainee, London
"I am very satisfied with the quality of work I'm assigned and the responsibility I am given. For instance, I regularly call clients one-on-one to give advice."

"I think satisfaction varies from department to department, but in my current department I do a lot of 'real' work, and very little admin such as photocopying and scanning. I am involved with client meetings and calls on a regular basis."
First year trainee, London
"I am given a fair amount of responsibility as a trainee, and I am not hidden away from clients. I attend meetings and client events. My day-to-day responsibilities vary but include drafting documents, communicating with clients and research."

"I have had a high level of responsibility and almost daily interaction with clients, (although this depends on the seat). There are also opportunities to attend meetings and varied work."
First year trainee, London
"Your work depends on the department you are in and the supervisor you sit with. I have had a good amount of client interaction and responsibility, some was even above my level, but there was supervision along the way."
First year trainee, London
"Your level of responsibility varies between seats but I have had a lot of client interaction and have led matters by myself. There are opportunities to take on a lot of responsibility if you show yourself to be willing and able."
First year trainee, London
"I have daily client contact and I run some of my own matters. I do have some less interesting administrative work as well but all trainees do."
First year trainee, London
"In this seat, Finance, I have a great deal of responsibility and client-contact, which I am relishing. Day-to-day I keep transactions moving by drafting and commenting on documents, providing administrative support and chasing the other side, the client or third parties for answers to questions that have come up."
First year trainee, london
"I have been given a huge amount of responsibility, which allows development of legal skills. Trainees are trusted and respected members of the team, so there is a good level of client contact."
