English Teacher in China

As an English language teacher working between 16-25 hours per week for a period of 10/12 months, you will be responsible for planning and leading fun and engaging lessons that focus on practicing spoken English with large classes of Chinese students ranging from kindergarten to university level. Your school will provide you with teaching materials and guidance, but you will be encouraged to use your imagination and creativity to make your classes special. Depending on the age and ability of your students, you will have a Mandarin-speaking assistant to support you in the classroom.

Our extensive network of partner schools across China means that our teachers have the chance to work in large metropolises such as Beijing, Shanghai and Chongqing, or smaller cities like Jinan, Suzhou and Guiyang. Applicants are given the chance to express preferences in terms of location and school type during the application process.

Programme choice

We work with both state schools as well as private schools in China, and both schools types have their pros and cons. As an applicant with us, you get to specify which factors are most important to you, and we assign you a school accordingly.
In a nutshell, these are some of the differences between the options:

State schools: Work Monday through Friday, in most cities you teach 15 hours per week (26 in Shanghai); large classes of 40-50 students; you work with one age group, anything from kindergarten to university, more holidays and travel opportunities
Fee: £549 including a TEFL course and 2-weeks training in Beijing.

Private schools: Work Wednesday through Sunday, teach 25 hours per week; average class size 10 students; you work with various age groups, between 6-16 years old; about 30 days off per year but less holiday than at state schools;
Fee: Free programme, but refundable £150 required, which is returned after you've worked in China for 5 weeks.

Free housing is provided for all placements, except state school work in Shanghai, where the school helps you find accommodation.

To find out what it's like on the programme we recommend browsing our YouTube channel and watching some of the videos by our teachers about their experiences.

Are you looking for a shorter placement in China? We also offer work experience roles teaching English (for 2-7 weeks in summer) or tutoring whilst living with a family and learning Mandarin (for 1-3 months). To apply for these roles, please email us for more information. Please use 'Summer programmes in China from TARGETjobs' as the subject line of your email.
