When I was at university, unlike some other people I didn’t have a clear view of what I wanted to do for the rest of my life. However I wanted to be involved in a business that had a meaningful impact on people’s lives, and started thinking about the water industry. As the largest water company serving the most diverse part of the country, Thames Water offered such a variety of opportunities that I thought it would be a great place to start my career. As I met my future colleagues throughout the recruitment process I knew it was the place for me.
One of my first roles was managing a team of operators on our largest site in London. I didn’t get everything right but learnt so much about our business and how to lead and look after people. More recently I’ve really enjoyed being part of the team that develops the overall strategy for our business. It’s a really exciting time to be involved in this as there are some major changes coming up in our industry that will present us with some superb opportunities.
The variety and the opportunities are great. If you don’t know completely where you want to end up but want to do something challenging and rewarding, I can’t think of a better place to start your career.
What do you believe are the key skills you need to do your role?
Common sense, enthusiasm and being able to work as part of a team.
One thing you would tell yourself now if you were just starting as a grad:
Don’t say “no” – try everything and don’t be afraid to make mistakes along the way.
