Science Graduate Programme
What is the Science Graduate pathway?
Are you looking for a brilliant opportunity to gain direct access to world-leading experts in one of the largest utility companies in the UK? Thames Water are custodians of the environment. Our scientists help protect and improve the environment for current and future generations; as well as ensuring our water quality is the best it can be for our 7 million customers. As a function, we’re here forever and continually working to create a sustainable future.
Our science graduate pathway is unique and offers you the chance to learn and develop and potentially go on to be a leader in our business. You will follow a journey through our scientific services learning about the different science disciplines and how these fit together as a whole. You could be based anywhere across our Thames Valley region; from Reading to Swindon to East London and anywhere in-between.
We will look at your strengths and qualifications throughout the whole recruitment process. Your base will change dependent on your role placements as you progress and develop the skills and experience you need.
What could you be doing as a Science Graduate?
We will give you an all-round experience of our scientific centre of excellence and the world of our Chief Scientist as well as the different types of scientists that keep our customers safe and healthy.
Our science pathway follows a rotational approach in the following four areas:
- The Laboratory: working with our lab scientists.
- Clean Water: spending time out in the field with water quality technicians.
- Wastewater: understanding wastewater quality standards.
- The Law: looking at the world of a regulator scientist.
You will have the chance to explore and develop into the type of scientist you would like to be through experiential learning, time with experts and four varied placements. You will witness the large scale vital work each of these areas contributes to the safety and wellbeing of our customers on a daily basis. You will also appreciate how each of the areas relates to one another.
What can you expect from the Graduate Programme?

There are also opportunities to become STEM ambassadors at Thames Water and to mentor and inspire the next generation of scientists.
