The City Law School

The institution

The City Law School is one of London's major law schools offering an impressive range of academic and professional courses. We were the first law school in London to educate students and practitioners at all stages of legal training. In addition, the School also offers a wide range of tailored CPD courses for qualified lawyers and those in associated professions.

The School incorporates the former Inns of Court School of Law (ICSL) - the original provider of bar training. The name Inns of Court School of Law was discontinued in 2008 when the School simply became The City Law School to reflect the breadth of academic, postgraduate and professional education that we provide.

The School is part of City, University of London. Founded in 1894, City is in the top 5% of world universities according to the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2015.

Postgraduate study

Our courses include the Bar Professional Training Course and Legal Practice Course, both taught from our Gray’s Inn Place campus, close to all the Inns and based in the heart of legal London. We also offer law conversion programmes for non-law graduates, including the well renowned Graduate Diploma in Law, and the two year Graduate Entry LLB programme.

Our Master of Laws programme (LLM) gives students the flexibility to enhance their knowledge, choosing from a range of different modules to gain a general Master of Laws award, or specialise in a particular area. We also offer the LLM in International Business Law, delivered via distance learning online, and the LLM in Maritime Law, which is taught in Greece.

Our Academic Staff have a wealth of expert teaching and professional legal experience. Their student-focused approach and genuine passion for the study of law gives students access to some of the best legal minds available today.

Research

The School takes an active role in the legal profession, legal research and the wider business community. The School’s internationally recognised experts lead research across a diverse range of areas, including criminal law, human rights, intellectual property & information technology and public law. The primary purpose of this research is creating value for society, both locally (in London and the UK) and globally.

Our lecturers are leaders in their respective fields and the impact of our academic research helps inform the development of legal education, the practice of law and the development of UK and international policy. The City Law School’s performance in the Research Excellence Framework results 2014 was the second highest for City, University of London, with the overall percentage of 3* and 4* research increasing from 35% to 65%.

Facilities

The City Law School is based on two campuses, with academic programmes based at our Northampton Square campus, and the professional law programmes taught at our Gray’s Inn Place campus. Each campus has a dedicated law library and social space for students, as well as areas for group work, quiet study and advocacy demo sessions. Students are able to use the university wide facilities and support services including the Careers department CitySport gym, and join a wide variety of clubs and societies. Students are also invited to be part of the City Law School Student Society.  As City is now part of the University of London (as of September 2016), students are also able to use facilities and resources provided by the University of London, including Senate House Library.
