"The informal training we get through sharing rooms with a partner and associates of different levels is what really helps you to develop. You pick up a huge amount by just listening to how they interact with clients and other departments. It also means there is always someone there you can ask if you have a question."

"There is very much an open-door policy at Travers and trainees are encouraged to go and speak to people in person rather than communicating purely via email and telephone. We have a three-month review half way through each seat and then another end-of-seat review. Both are useful in helping us as trainees recognise areas where we are progressing well and other areas still needing development."

"People at all levels of the firm are approachable and try to get trainees involved with as much work as possible. I regularly receive feedback on work I produce and the associates and partners take the time to sit down and talk through any amendments they make to my work product. The firm's room sharing structure allows you to learn by osmosis and pick up soft skills as well as legal knowledge from the lawyers that you share a room with."

"The praise, recognition and feedback you get varies from partner to partner. Most are more than happy to have a coffee and discuss how you may improve work, but you may need to wait a couple of weeks until they are free."
Second year trainee, London
"Everyone is very accessible. Feedback and appraisals are great."

"The room structure lends itself well to lots of informal training, which I think is the bulk of it at Travers. Just being able to turn around and ask questions makes a massive difference."
Second year trainee, London
"Some partners and associates are very good at giving feedback and providing guidance. You definitely benefit a lot from the room-sharing system. However there does not seem to be much emphasis on training people as mentors and managers so your experience can be slightly uneven across the firm."

"I've been fortunate enough to have friendly and encouraging mentors along the way. This especially helped when it came to making the right decision upon qualification."
Second year trainee, London
"The room structure means that you are always able to ask for help from someone at the right 'level'. Feedback is something that I have constantly been given, whether through mark-ups or face-to-face conversations."

"I found that everyone at the firm is very approachable for feedback on work, and that they regularly offer up feedback, without the trainee needing to ask for it. I found the best thing about Travers Smith's training to be the soft skills that you pick up by sharing a room with partners and associates."
First year trainee, London
"In my experience the informal mentoring here is fantastic, as people really take time to teach you, and to get to know you."
Second year trainee, London
"I have been impressed by my colleagues always taking the time to explain difficult issues, and being available to answer questions."

"The informal training is excellent at Travers Smith as you are sharing a room with partners and associates. You therefore learn a huge amount by osmosis as you see how they interact with clients. I always felt that I could ask questions, whether to the partners or the associates, and that feedback will be given on all the work you do."

"The collegiate nature of the firm means that I feel that I can ask for advice from a broad range of people at all levels. While I prefer to speak to people that I share an office with or have a good relationship with, there is a formal mentoring scheme for trainees at the firm."

"Generally the partners and associates are extremely accessible and feedback tends to be detailed."
First year trainee, London
"Partners extremely accessible. We have appraisals every three months. I am constantly asked how I am doing by many members of the firm."
First year trainee, London
"You get feedback from every job you do; at the least it is a thank you. Marked up pieces of work are also common so you can see areas that you can improve on."
First year trainee, London
"Every trainee usually sits with a partner which enables trainees to learn from them throughout the day just by listening in to their discussions as well as creating the opportunity for in depth explanations."
Second year trainee, London
"Mentoring standards depend on the individual but in my experience supervisors are approachable and take trainees' development seriously; we aren't seen as a chore."
First year trainee, London
"Partners are really accessible, I feel able to ask questions of them. People always say thank you for your contribution."
First year trainee, London
"Partners are generally very engaged with the development of junior lawyers - I've been given work specifically to help my development rather than because I've necessarily added value."

"Arguably the biggest reason to be a trainee at Travers Smith is the mentoring by the partners you sit with, constant teaching, feedback and advice in an open manner."
Second year trainee, London
"Very accessible, approachable and supportive. People will give you work, ask you to come to them with any questions and mean it! Feedback (both positive and negative) is constant, so you never feel like there's a nasty surprise waiting at your next review."
Second year trainee, London
"People are very accessible (even partners) and there is regular feedback."
First year trainee, London
"Junior associates each have a senior associate mentor and most partners are approachable."

"Partners and associates take a very active role in ensuring that you are able to cope with the work that you are doing and I have had guidance whenever necessary throughout my first two seats."
