Interview: Tips & Advice

2016

"An online application, online reasoning test, video interview, assessment centre with written work and interview and then a final-round interview with two partners (if you apply straight for the training contract route). I think it is great if you have a list of questions that you are bound to be asked and practice your answers in front of the mirror. Be on top of your commercial awareness and know what the biggest deals Weil is working on at that time (make sure you find deals that the London office has worked on)."

"Vacation scheme with interview and assessments. Make sure you are very specific about Weil and clearly understand what Weil does (ie practice areas) and its place in the market."

"The application process consists of an online form, a critical reasoning test, a video interview and an assessment centre, which includes interview and a written exercise. The focus of the recruitment process is on applicants' commercial awareness, their ability to demonstrate why they seek a career in commercial law and why Weil is the firm where they want that career. Accordingly, my advice would be to prepare with these three broad goals in mind."

"Commercial awareness is important for the interview, and you should especially show awareness of how economic circumstances affect the firm's business."

"Definitely know what private equity is, and show why you're interested in it, because it is the bread and butter of Weil. Having a basic understanding of how a business works helps too."

"I applied through the vacation scheme route, so I had an initial interview with a partner and an associate, where we discussed my CV and then a commercial case study. The scheme itself includes several assessments, including a straightforward written assessment, a negotiation exercise and a presentation. Finally, there is a training contract interview with two partners. In terms of preparation for interviews at the firm, the key is to have fully researched the firm, its strengths and its distinguishing features from other rival firms. For example, understanding the concept of private equity is an absolute must. You will also be expected to demonstrate some commercial awareness, although reading the Financial Times regularly and being aware of what's happening in the business and political worlds should be sufficient."

"The interview process is challenging but straightforward: they want to know that you understand their business, are motivated, willing to take on responsibility and will fit in."

"Research the firm! Read about the London office in particular - we are not an outpost of the US, and a lot of our work is home grown. There are several very prestigious teams in London who are recognised for the work that they do - finance, restructuring and private equity in particular. Be sure that you are interested in these practice areas before applying - it's not a firm for anyone who has their heart set on property or IP."

"Research the key practice areas of the firm and understand the firm's position in the legal market. During the vacation scheme, keep detailed notes of the tasks you have been given so you can explain these at interview."
Second year trainee, London
"Before the interview do your research - know as much as possible about the firm."
Second year trainee, London
"Learn about the firm; what deals it has done and who its major clients are. Have a basic understanding of a private equity transaction and leverage debt buy-out."
First year trainee, London
"Be sure to research the firm. Know what sets you apart from other candidates."
