Satisfaction with Work

8.8 / 10

(based on 18 ratings in 2016)

2016

"There's a lot of substantive work for a first-year trainee. Client interaction includes calling and emailing clients directly as well as dealing with counsels directly."
First year trainee, London
"I have only been a trainee for a few days and have already had a lot of involvement in the newest deals and work in the department. On my first day, the partner came in and gave me meaningful work."
First year trainee, London
"The quality of work is excellent. Day to day, trainees can expect to be given drafting and asked to review and comment on documents as well as manage aspects of transactions."
Second year trainee, London
"My role is to work on matters with associates and partners. If the partner has a larger team then I will usually do much of the more basic work, which can involve anything from reviewing documents to inserting amendments or emailing clients. On smaller matters with a smaller team, comprising perhaps only of myself and a partner or a senior associate, I will do more substantive work such as suggesting amendments or making first drafts and managing the matter with the client. I have generally found the level of work good and that the more skills and confidence you can show to people, the more they will involve you and the more responsibility you can be given. However, I understand this can vary across departments."
First year trainee, London
"The quality of the work varies from more of the mundane admin tasks to drafting."
Second year trainee, London
"I have had the opportunity to work on some great deals and experience the highest quality of work. However, sometimes the trainee tasks can be menial."
First year trainee, London
"As you progress through your training contract, the quality of work that is assigned to you gets better and better. If you do a good job, you will be given a good deal of responsibility."
Second year trainee, London
"This varies from department to department but trainees can expect to be involved in a variety of tasks on a matter."

"My client interaction varies from very little to a fairly large amount at times, depending on the department and on the current workload in those departments. That said, generally, associates do try and give you some exposure to and interaction with clients."
Second year trainee, London
"My role and responsibility varies between departments and supervisors: sometimes I am almost running deals and speaking with clients, sometimes I am just proofreading or bundling documents."
Second year trainee, London
"I have lots of responsibility as trainee: I run small work streams rather than just typical trainee tasks. My level of client contact is great and I am included as part of client-facing team."
Second year trainee, London
"Although my client interaction in my second seat has been limited to emails, in my first seat I had a lot of client interaction, attending client meetings and hearings. My days are varied, but can include due diligence exercises, review and proofreading of documents, sending documents to clients and amending documents to reflect commercial agreements."
Second year trainee, London
"As a trainee, if you are proactive you can get a great variety of work including due diligence, complex legal research, drafting, as well as the expected CP management and post-closing. Client interaction depends on the department; with some departments offering trainees more contact than others."
First year trainee, London
"Recently, I have had more client interaction as I have been asked to attend meetings and calls. However, my interaction is limited to taking minutes and admin tasks rather than liaising directly with clients. Day-to-day responsibilities include organising video conferences and calls, printing documents, proofreading, inserting amendments and research."
First year trainee, London
"It varies from department to department, so in some you get much more direct client contact and more responsibility, but generally across the board there are good opportunities to get involved in interesting work. Day-to-day the kind of work varies, from the less exciting tasks such as proofreading and managing completion checklists to the more interesting tasks such as drafting documents and reviewing comments from other parties."

"Depending on your seat and level, you do get a great deal of exposure to clients and on smaller deals, trainees may get the opportunity to handle the day-to-day running of the transaction."
First year trainee, London
"I am responsible for filing and organising documents. I also help print documents for the more senior lawyers. Occasionally I draft basic legal agreements and comment on more complex documents. I proofread a lot of documents. The amount of client interaction you get varies hugely depending on the deal you are on and department you are in."
Second year trainee, London
"My client interaction has been fairly good, although it varies quite a lot between seats and projects. Levels of responsibility have also varied quite a lot, but I feel I have been given good exposure on some exciting work at times. Slightly less interesting trainee tasks have been common as well, but these are unavoidable and provide some good training and understanding of the transactions. I am generally pretty satisfied with the work."
Second year trainee, London
"The work you are given really depends upon the department and geographical region. In overseas offices, you're likely to be in contact with clients on a far more frequent basis than in London. However, you generally feel far more prepared for client interaction in London as you've been put through the proper steps (and therefore actually know what you're doing!). International seats generally have a tendency to throw you in at the deep end to see if you can swim."
Second year trainee, Tokyo
"Personally, I don't have much client interaction. Mostly I have been proofreading and fact checking but recently I've been working on some business development projects which are very interesting."
