The Allianz Corporate Insurance Graduate Scheme appealed to me because it sounded like you would have a hands-on experience, be able to get involved with the business and become part of a team straight away, which you definitely do.
I was initially based in Chelmsford for my two year placement on scheme, where I worked as a Fleet Underwriter. I initially started on new business, pricing risks and building relationships with brokers for large fleets of vehicles. I was then given the opportunity 9 months into my placement to work on a year-long project on the LV= migration in Maidstone, where I currently am now. I was not expecting to be offered this role and it demonstrates how versatile the scheme can be – I am still a fleet underwriter but my role is completely different to what it was in Chelmsford branch and has provided me with exposure to a completely different side of the business.
Not only have I enjoyed the versatility of the day to day role, but also the opportunity to meet so many people. As an Allianz graduate there is regular exposure to senior staff in the business, something which is key to career progression. Also, being on the scheme means regularly meeting with the same graduates for training who are based across the country, and getting to visit various offices, which has been my favourite part of the scheme so far. Through projects, presentations and training, I have met staff in a number of locations and I enjoy seeing how each branch operates differently.
Allianz focus on your development, offering you the opportunity to work with a mentor when you begin in the company, and numerous training opportunities. There is support through CII qualifications to become ACII certified, but also through Allianz’s accredited underwriting academies and skills workshops, which provide an insight into how to handle different business situations and develop personal skills such as presenting.
I’d thoroughly recommend the graduate scheme if you enjoy solving problems, thinking outside of the box and like to be challenged. Although the assessment day is nerve- racking, it offers a good insight into what a role in Allianz would be like, and will help to determine whether you think the company would be right for you.
