Jim Smith

Brand Specialist

I work as a Brand Specialist in Amazon’s retail team, and am responsible for working closely with key strategic partners to grow their business on Amazon. I studied Politics with International Relations at the University of Bath, but at Amazon they look more at your ability to show the Amazon leadership principles than what subject your degree is in.

Brand specialists focus on managing inputs for their brands; from working on their product selection, ordering and stock levels right through to supporting with their marketing packages, promotions or traffic. Although every company claims to have a core set of values that underpin its actions, I’ve never experienced a set of values as embedded as the leadership principles. Perhaps the most important is ‘Customer Obsession’, and Amazon uses this principle to guide all of its decision making. It’s a refreshing experience when faced with a tough business decision, to quickly know which action to take simply by asking what is best for our customers.

Amazon’s breadth is one of the things that makes it a great place to work; the scope of everyone’s role is so large that you not only take on a lot of responsibility, but are really responsible for driving, owning and delivering the things you work on. I’ve been encouraged to work outside of my normal role, working on projects that span the entire business and give you great exposure across the Amazon business.

Although it can sometimes be a fast-paced environment, I enjoy the atmosphere in the office. It is very friendly and there are many activities and events organised within and outside of work - from book, photography or sport clubs to live music from the Amazon Music artists. A few weeks ago I made sausage rolls with MasterChef’s John Torode!

Having been at Amazon for a year, I would certainly recommend the role to anyone who wishes to work in an exciting environment where you have to continually learn. It’s a great start to a post-University life and career.
