Diversity

2019

"We're the best in the City for this as we have so many inclusivity groups. We have LGBT, ethnicity and gender equality groups, which most other firms have, but we go further than this. We have groups for people who are carers for example."

"Diversity and inclusion is a key topic that is self-driven by people at the firm. It is not a buzzword but an active topic and action that people enjoy contributing to."
First year trainee, London
"Diversity is high on the agenda at the firm and there are daily reminders that the firm is committed to diversifying its workforce. There are committees, support groups, regular email updates and organised events that are all focused on diversity and inclusion. This includes a commitment to social mobility that means I regularly attend events aimed at opening up the legal profession (particularly corporate City law) to people who may not have otherwise considered it."
First year trainee, London
"There are a number of diversity focus groups eg Baker LGBT, Baker ethnicity. All members of staff are encouraged to join at least one focus group."
Second year trainee, London
"Diversity is in the DNA of Bakers. The firm already has a strong history of championing sexual, racial and gender diversity and the firm is building on this by opening up new areas such as for mental health, age and experience."
First year trainee, London
"There are a load of important diversity and CSR initiatives, sometimes in partnership with clients. If there is an area that lacks some sort of action or group, there is active encouragement to found a group to fill the gap."

"Bakers is genuinely really concerned about diversity and puts a lot of effort into this area. There are focus groups relating to gender issues, LGBT, social mobility and ethnicity. The graduate recruitment team has made changes in the past number of years to take a person's background and school attended into account when recruiting as well as blanking out names etc to avoid unintentional bias."

"The agile working system is particularly helpful to new parents and there are firm-wide initiatives on representation of ethnic minorities. We have well attended societies, from LGBT+ to BME, as well as having received awards that recognise how committed the firm is to promoting women into senior positions."

"Diversity events are very important to our firm. BakerWomen, BakerAllies and BakerLGBT are examples of some of the groups we have to promote diversity. The current work we are doing in relation to HeForShe is brilliant too."
Second year trainee, London
"We have good initiatives and get external recognition for our programmes."

"I have been given the support and resources to run the firm's anti-bullying campaign. I am a member of several diversity groups and, by attending focus group meetings, I am aware that each group is led by motivated individuals who aim to make more waves in their respective areas."

"With regard to diversity issues I think that the firm is very good at catering for women and LGBT issues."
Second year trainee, London
"Here there is a strong focus on diversity with specific focus groups for women, ethnic minorities, LGBT and social mobility. From what I have seen, there is a focus on flexible working hours, particularly for working parents."
Second year trainee, London
"I attend BakerWomen meetings which are very popular. External speakers are often invited. The firm has a huge commitment to LGBT and ethnic communities and I get the impression that Bakers is the most diverse firm in the city. Lots of women have flexible working hours when they have children however there needs to be more female partners. Some departments like IT Comm have zero female partners."
Second year trainee, London
"The firm has a focus groups working on diversity issues, and these are in relation to: women, ethnic minorities, LGBT individuals, social mobility and well-being. These groups meet regularly to discuss issues and ways to improve the firm's approach to such issues. They also organise firm events where clients or speakers come in, and these are open to all at the firm."

First year trainee, London
"The firm in excellent in this area - there is plenty of focus on this and seems to be a very diverse firm in any case. Diversity is considered a strength not just for culture but for business."
Second year trainee, London
"The firm widely promotes diversity in all its forms and, more than that, there is a culture of celebrating the diversity that exists throughout the organisation."
Second year trainee, Brussels
"The firm is impressive in terms of diversity and is always looking for more to do. The firm puts a lot of time and resources into being a leader in the legal profession, and encourages lawyers to campaign on diversity issues they care about."
First year trainee, London
"Excellent Women's Network, progressive view towards maternity leave and reduction of working hours in order to meet family needs, etc."
First year trainee, London
"Huge emphasis on diversity with active participation groups in place for respect to women, ethnic minorities, social mobility and LGBT."
Second year trainee, London
"The diversity commitment is certainly one of the best in the City. There is a strong ethnic minority presence across all levels of the firm, while there is also extensive LGBT activism. Focus groups across the firm make a concerted effort to put diversity on the agenda in all contexts."
