I relish under pressure and love the incredibly diverse environment; every day is different because every client you have is different and their needs change on a daily basis.
I had the opportunity to experience a summer internship in The Private Bank and Overseas Service, specifically looking at International clients. I identified with this through my experiences at university, school and summer jobs. I enjoyed working in a team environment, communicating to different people on a daily basis and providing a unique service to clients – thus adding value. The Private Bank seemed to suit my skill set the best and provided my motivation behind my application for the role.
The term Investment Management: Private Bank and Wealth Management, can be interchangeable at many different banks. However in Barclays, because of SRP and the ring-fencing, there are significant differences between Wealth and Investments and The Private Bank and Overseas Service – you really need to make sure to read into both areas and decide which division is best suited to you.
The Private Bank moves at a very fast pace, which I find very exciting. I relish under pressure and love the incredibly diverse environment; every day is different because every client you have is different and their needs change on a daily basis. It is an interesting time for the Private Bank at the moment as it grows and expands the services offered to clients and the regions in which we do business. Being able to convey lots of information quickly and efficiently to each client is key to this role, whilst being able to understand each clients’ aims and objectives to have meaningful conversations with them in the first instance is so important too. You will often be juggling multiple tasks at the same time, therefore being able to organise yourself and structure your day, whilst also being flexible with your schedule is vital.
During my internship, I have been helping with usual day-to-day tasks of a Private Banking Executive, whilst I have also been working on some interesting projects, involving prospecting new clients, looking for regions where we could develop more of a presence, and namely, working on the ‘Top 100 Client Plan’ – which looks to extend our services to our Top 100 clients and add value, which should in turn strengthen the relationship.
The department is a lot of fun and alongside work there are a lot of events to get involved in, offering diversity and a strong feeling of collaboration. International Men’s Day is one event that I got involved in and there’s a golfing tournament happening in a couple of weeks. I feel as though this reflects the core values of Barclays and provides a welcoming and supportive atmosphere.
