Formal Training

(based on 18 ratings in 2019)

2019

"There's loads of training, both department-specific (which is at the beginning of the seat as a one-week intensive, followed by lots of sessions throughout the seat) and on soft skills on an ad hoc basis. This includes presentation skills, dealing with difficult people and so on."

"The training prior to joining groups varies massively between departments. The litigation training is particularly involved but there's a lot less when you're joining the smaller groups. I have had the chance to be involved with a lot of business development training."
Second year trainee, London
"The training is structured and specific to each seat. It's principally conducted by lawyers."

"The CC academy has mandatory and non-mandatory courses to improve your legal skills and interpersonal skills."

"There are induction programmes when you join a different department that each last a couple of days. We have access to an impressive range of templates, precedents and know-how resources that are great when you want to familiarise yourself with a certain topic. We also have many seminars and presentations given by externals on a wide range of topics. During my training contract, I have improved my research skills and my drafting skills. In terms of business skills I am now confident in reaching out to externals and working with people who have different working styles from mine. I have also done a lot of transaction management and appreciate how trainees are given autonomy in working on this. I think the firm should consider making more videos available on certain topics that can be reviewed during quieter periods at work."

"The training programmes, both legal and non-legal, are great and very comprehensive. I recently attended a day-long course in business accounting."

"The training offered by the Clifford Chance Academy is second to none."

"No stone is left unturned in training, especially that on offer when you are moving departments to help you refresh your learning."

"In addition to the necessary legal training, there's a focus on soft skills as well."
Second year trainee, London
"I have been provided with a number of training sessions, which have been enhancing my legal knowledge and communication skills and other skills that a trainee solicitor must possess."
First year trainee, London
"The training on offer is excellent, and comprehensive too."
Second year trainee, London
"The Clifford Chance Academy provides a full training programme and we undertake induction programmes at the beginning of each new seat to aid our development and learning."

"The training is good, but I feel that a lot of it is a bit of information overload. A lot of what we learn in induction is quite sophisticated and in such condensed portions, so sometimes it is hard to pick up things straight away. I find that informal training has been more useful and important to my development. The legal drafting workshop the firm hosted was really useful though."
First year trainee, London
"A lot of legal training within department (talks, workshops etc) and CC Academy for skills training e.g. working effectively."
First year trainee, London
"The resources and continuous courses are fantastic and ensure continuing development of the trainees."
First year trainee, Frankfurt
"We get very good training from CC Academy and individual departments. Quality of training does vary amongst departments but it is all of a high quality. Non-legal skills training (e.g. general communication, presentation and leadership skills) is also provided."
Second year trainee, London
"The training is good, and you develop legal and project management skills quickly. Appraisals every three months keep you on track and aware of your progress."
Second year trainee, Tokyo
"The firm does make an effort to provide comprehensive training. In terms of non-legal skills I think they could do a lot more, in terms of technical/legal knowledge, the lectures provided by the firm are plentiful."
Second year trainee, London
"The training is excellent. There are plenty of presentations, workshops, client presentations, online videos. I have been able to improve the following skills during my training: drafting skills, communication skills, negotiations skills. I have also learned a lot about the particular departments that I have worked in and the type of work that the firm does."

"Training varies between departments, but is often of a high standard, if a little infrequent. Most learning occurs on-the-job, so you have to be able to learn from your mistakes!"
First year trainee, London
"Excellent. Lots of practical training on the key issues and how these may affect your work."
Second year trainee, London
"We're always encouraged to participate in online training, there are regular industry sector or legal sector updates and talks, and the compulsory SRA training requirements are often met by face to face courses hosted by engaging and interesting speakers. Trainees also take part in case studies and presentation initiatives to develop 'softer' skills."
First year trainee, London
"The firm is very dedicated to providing good training - legal as well as business skills."
Second year trainee, London
"We have training at the beginning of each seat and throughout each seat we attend lectures on different topics relevant to the seat. We also attend a number of external courses. The training is very good."
