In my second seat mid-seat appraisal, I was pleased to get good feedback both from within the team I was working for and from associates from other departments, which was very motivating for me. Partners are also very thankful of the work I have done on some things for them. I appreciate how more senior members within a team make me feel to be an important part of the transaction from the beginning to the closing of a deal."

When you complete your work, you generally get some feedback, so you always know whether what you did was useful or not."

"I think a lot of it is learning on-the-job, but there are so many great materials you can have access to, and there's always someone you can ask to get you started on something new to you. I've managed to get a lot of feedback on drafting to a specific audience, and opportunities to present to my department my ideas and research, as well as experience talking on the phone to clients and other third parties. My supervisor is my rock, she's really forgiving and kind as she understands what it's like to be a trainee, and she always wants to get me on the right track."

"Mentoring varies enormously depending on who you are working for. Some people have the gift of being good mentors, others not so much and I don't perceive that they are given the training that might help them become good. In terms of performance feedback, generally people are very direct which can take some getting used to. Praise is usually in the form of positive comments in emails or in your end of seat appraisal."
