Fuel Card Services (FCS), a DCC Retail & Oil business in Oxford, was my first placement on the programme. As a Marketing Executive I was responsible for marketing the company’s products on the European markets, in particular the German market, and it gave me the opportunity to work with different teams and to gain exposure to different working cultures. One of my favourite projects was managing the development and re-launch of the FCS’s fuel station finder app, which allowed me to gain experience in negotiation and collaboration with partners. Additionally, it was one of several projects I was able to see through from outset to successful implementation.
My second placement saw me taking on the role of Operational Marketing Project Manager for Butagaz, a French DCC LPG business based in Paris. Part of my responsibilities were the creation and management of marketing campaigns as well as the coordination of Butagaz’s Customer Relationship Management (CRM) website. I benefitted greatly from working closely with well-known international agencies and various stakeholders from within and outside the business. Working in French was an exciting challenge and an amazing opportunity to fully get to know another culture and become fluent in French!
When I started the programme, it was important to me to have the chance to learn as much as possible about different business segments in order to grow professionally. Not only did I receive invaluable work experience in my placements, but DCC also sponsored me to study the (CIM) Certificate in Professional Marketing qualification. Also, my placement businesses have further enhanced my skillset with training on things like Photoshop and HTML-5 and before I even began my Butagaz placement in Paris I was given one-to-one French lessons. It helped me feel well-prepared for my move and adapting to the new work environment was all the smoother for it.
It’s been a steep learning curve but now I have a clear vision of my strengths and the career path I would like to pursue. At the end of the Graduate Programme, I was offered to stay in the position I held during my second placement in Paris but with expanded responsibilities. These include a divisional project across DCC’s LPG businesses, which is an exciting assignment and is sure to enable me to maintain accelerated growth even after the Graduate Programme.
