Victoria Goodsell

Trainee Solicitor

When I was applying for training contracts, I read all the various publications, attended open evenings and made a point of meeting the graduate recruitment teams at my university law fair. This helped me identify Dentons in particular as a firm I could see myself working at. The firm has a culture which makes it a welcoming and supportive place to work, as well as strong expertise in a number of areas, particularly in banking, which was an area I knew I had an interest in and wanted to gain experience of.

I applied directly to the training contract, so I didn't do a vacation scheme with the firm. At that time the process involved an interview with HR as well as an interview with two partners (rather than an assessment centre) which involved reviewing a business case study. The process itself was very useful in getting to know the firm, and I joined as a trainee in August 2017. I am currently in the third of my four six month seats, currently Technology, Media and Telecoms. I have also sat in Dispute Resolution and Banking and Finance. I have really enjoyed my training contract so far – it pushes you to be analytical and think outside the box, and two days are rarely the same. All three departments have given me opportunities to work on high profile, interesting matters. I've been given real responsibility and opportunities, from turning drafts of master services agreements to working on security documentation to attending hearings at the Court of Appeal!

The firm has an excellent learning and development programme. In addition to our induction training and others ongoing skills training, each department runs lots of its own training, both formal and informal. We're also welcome to attend breakfast seminars, which give us another opportunity both to develop our knowledge and meet some of the clients we are acting for.
