Charlie Esam

Business Management Associate

I chose Fidelity because of the variety of opportunity their graduate schemes provide. Some schemes are rotational, which means you get the chance to work in different teams in completely separate areas of the organisation. At a early point in my career I felt it was the best chance to build up a variety of different skills rather than specialising too early. What has become apparent since working here is that interns and graduates are given work with a real business impact straight away, the organisation will treat you in the same way they would a full time senior employee and you will be working on tasks that have genuine importance.

My scheme (Business Management) involves 6 month rotations across a variety of roles across a 2/3 year period. So far I have worked in a Sales Support team, the Fixed Income analytics team, and currently I am in a Digital Wealth team. Graduates are encouraged to try to follow their interests, but to also build up knowledge and skills within areas that we are unfamiliar with. Highlights have involved: being the project lead for a crucial application to the UK regulators, presenting to a sales team on their new reporting system, and working with portfolio managers in Fixed Income. As those highlights suggest it is the ownership of tasks that I enjoy, and it is good to feel like you are contributing to such a large organisation from the off.

Fidelity offer a lot of support for interns and graduates, in particular support in pursuing professional qualifications. We are also provided training in presentation and in communicating effectively. More generally, the work-life balance is very good and there is a friendly atmosphere within the company.
