“From the second I walked through the doors I knew I was part of something special. To work for an organisation where drive and motivation comes not from money, but from the opportunity to do extraordinary things for my country gives me an immense sense of achievement.” – Aled, Cyber Security Specialist. GCHQ – the Government Communications Headquarters – is one of the UK’s three intelligence agencies (alongside MI5 and MI6). Based in Cheltenham, Gloucestershire and with a number of sites around the country, our mission is to protect the UK’s people, businesses and interests from a variety of threats in the cyber age. That means we use our technical expertise to provide intelligence, protect information, inform government policy, and ultimately keep UK society safe, secure and successful. To achieve this, our work relies on far more than technical specialists. We employ a range of people with a variety of skills, experiences and backgrounds who have the ability to approach complex problems from different perspectives. They range from world-class experts in understanding computer networks to specialists in areas such as project management, procurement and HR. What they share is a commitment to working together to achieve GCHQ’s mission.
As the UK government’s appointed experts in cyber security, we gather and analyse intelligence using some of the world’s most powerful technology. IT, electronics and telecommunications specialists work together with mathematicians, language analysts and intelligence analysts to uncover and interpret vital information. They supply their findings to UK government, law enforcement and military customers to inform both policy and security operations. The focus is on collaboration and teamwork – combining different areas of expertise to stay one step ahead of the terrorists, hackers and cyber criminals who threaten the UK. It requires innovative thinking, the ability to tackle interesting and varied projects and the creativity and intellect to develop unique solutions. You’ll gain a range of transferable skills and professional qualifications that will prepare you for a rewarding career. You’ll also enjoy personalised training, mentoring and shadowing, not to mention the opportunity to contribute to work that can be incredibly rewarding. We also offer a number of summer placement schemes for undergraduates studying Science, Technology, Engineering or Maths courses in a variety of business teams. Due to the sensitive nature of our work, to apply you must be a British citizen.
