I’d first heard of GLL when they attended a careers fair at Loughborough during my time there. I’d always liked the idea of owning my own Health and Fitness Club before, so having the opportunity to work for the largest leisure provider in the UK appeared to be the perfect match for me.

The Trainee Manager scheme provided me with a 2-year fast track in to leisure, giving me experience in all frontline roles in the first year. These included fitness instructing and sales experience to lifeguarding and project management. The second year of the scheme gave me more managerial experience as a leisure centre duty manager and health and fitness supervisor. These roles often involved managing large teams of up to 20 people and allowed me to apply all of the experience I’d learnt in the first year alongside my own practical knowledge and skills. Training opportunities on the scheme were constant throughout and varied from in-house training in customer service and leisure centre operations to external and accredited training gained when completing FI Level 2 fitness instructing or the National Pool Lifeguards Qualification (NPLQ).

The Trainee Manager scheme was ever changing and diverse. Trainee Managers are often used to help with wider business initiatives and are integrated throughout the organisation which allows you to build professional and social relationships quickly. I felt very at ease in the company from the start. As with all jobs, there are positives and negatives. Working in leisure is both challenging and rewarding. During the scheme you can often expect to work early or late shifts and on weekends where you will be needed to assist the business or your specified centre at these times. Your work will also vary throughout the scheme and time management combined with organisation and prioritisation of objectives will be critical. There are however, always support structures in place to assist you.

Trainee Managers are assigned buddies alongside a line manager and senior mentor too, who have either completed the scheme previously or hold a senior position. They are there to offer you help along the way. When I started with the company just four years ago, we operated mainly in London and have since expended in to Northern Ireland, Manchester, Newcastle, Cambridge, Oxfordshire, Cardiff, Cornwall and many more places across the UK. We offer services not just in leisure but in libraries, children’s play centres and much more. The organisation is diverse and forever growing meaning that opportunities within are great and the future holds unlimited possibilities.
