Probation Officers work closely with people across the criminal justice system, victims of crime, charities and the wider community. The work can be challenging but, for the right person, it’s an immensely rewarding career.

No matter your background or level of experience, the work-based training programme gives you the opportunity to make real difference right away:

  • 15 or 21 month training programme where you’ll gain the Professional Qualification in Probation (PQiP)
  • During your training you will earn £22,261 (plus £1,100 if in Buckinghamshire, Oxfordshire, Kent, Berkshire, Hertfordshire, Norfolk or Suffolk Local Delivery Units, or plus £3,889 if in London), rising to £29,038 plus allowances once you achieve the Probation Officer role
  • As well as working to have a real impact on society, you’ll get great benefits including:
  • Annual leave allowance of 25 days (which increases to 30 days after 5 years) plus 8 public holidays
  • Local Government Pension Scheme

About the probation service

The probation service is part of Her Majesty’s Prison and Probation Service (HMPPS). Our role is to protect the public, support victims and reduce reoffending across England and Wales. Our vision is simple: “Preventing Victims by Changing Lives”. Our work with offenders is first and foremost about ensuring communities are safe. By providing offenders with the means to rehabilitate, society is better protected against the effects of crime.
