Education: MSc—Finance and Private Equity—LSE
By the time I started my Masters I knew that I wanted to work in finance, and I chose Houlihan Lokey because it combined the kind of valuation expertise that I find interesting with an investment banking environment.
I first joined the firm on a six-month off-cycle internship in November 2018. As part of a small team it wasn’t long before I was given a similar level of responsibility to other analysts – if you demonstrate that you’re capable of doing the job independently then you’re given early responsibility.
In my team we provide two main services, involving transactions and portfolio valuations. Our role is essentially to determine the fair value of financial transactions, and to analyse the portfolio value of our clients for reporting purposes.
To be an Analyst you need quantitative skills and the ability to conduct technical analysis. You should also have strong writing skills, but most of all you need a lot of commitment. We always want to do the best for our clients so at times it can be quite intense, and you need to be able to stay focused.
My team is very international – everyone is from a different part of the world. We work hard, but my colleagues are always helpful – they’ll always take the time to explain what you need to do, so it’s a great place to learn.
