(based on 17 ratings in 2019)

2019

"This firm is so diverse and inclusive. It's running groups and events all the time to promote equality and diversity."
First year trainee, Sheffield
"We have many groups dedicated to helping minority groups. As an LGBT person, I think there are numerous policies and initiatives in place that are excellent."
First year trainee, Sheffield
"I'd say we need more BAME trainees."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"We have numerous internal committees focused on diversity. These range from LGBT to young parents."
Second year trainee, Sheffield
"Many groups in the firm advocate support for minority groups. There's a real drive for it this year."
Second year trainee, London
"The firm offers a range of groups and initiatives to actively promote diversity across all areas of the business."
First year trainee, Birmingham

2018

"We have different diversity groups in the firm committed to improving diversity and providing support for the individuals within those groups. Plus, we all wear LGBT lanyards and, as a member of the LGBT community, I'm loving wearing a rainbow everyday."
First year trainee, Sheffield
"There's commitment to improving BAME and LGBTQ recruitment in the Manchester office and this has significantly improved in recent years. Active efforts have been made to support specific diversity, social mobility schemes and BAME networks. Furthermore, we have internal networks working towards the promotion of diversity. The personal legal services side has fewer men so, naturally, this will be reflected at higher levels of management. There are noticeably low numbers of black solicitors in the firm, which is probably reflective of a wider institutional problem that has only started to be addressed effectively in the past ten years."
First year trainee, Manchester
"The firm clearly wants to be seen as diverse and inclusive. We are often exhibited with stories on our intranet about the firm's commitment to diversity. The firm even won an 'Excellence in Diversity' award recently."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"The firm is good on social mobility in the sense that it will accept someone who got a 2.2 at uni. With regards to everything else, it could be better. While there are platforms such as IM Equal (to address LGBTQ+ issues), IM Respect (to address ethnic diversity) and IM Empowered (to tackle gender equality), they aren't as active as I think they should be."
First year trainee, Manchester City Centre
"Irwin Mitchell is very committed to diversity, with various steering groups set up for minority groups. The female partner statistics are almost market-leading, although this is probably also a reflection of the type of work the firm does. As someone who identifies as LGBT, I feel I can be myself at work and I am well supported."
First year trainee, London
"IM is involved with all aspects of diversity. We have groups called IM Powered (focusing on gender equality), IM Equal (raises awareness for LBGT colleagues and clients), IM Respect (awareness of cultural and ethnic diversity), IM Aspiring (supporting social mobility) and IM Age (age related issues). Each group comprises people from all over the business, and not just fee earners."
First year trainee, London
"There are more initiatives being introduced and I do genuinely think the firm makes an effort to try to incorporate diversity into the workplace. However, this essentially boils down to your team and who you are working with directly."
First year trainee, London
"We have great diversity societies and a new one for the modern family that provides support and talks around difficult subjects."
First year trainee, Southampton

2017

"The firm is very hot on diversity and there are a number of internal groups for ethnic minorities, LGBT and women etc."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"There are equality groups for all minority groups and nobody is treated differently based on these characteristics."
Second year trainee, Sheffield
"There are lots of diverse action groups within the firm."
First year trainee, London
"We have an LGBT group at the firm who meet quarterly through video communication and discuss different ways to promote LGBT issues. I believe there are similar groups for ethnic minorities and religious groups. This encourages relationships to develop across the various offices."
First year trainee, Leeds
"The firm is very flexible in terms of childcare and maternity leave."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"There is a group focused on diversity and they hold and attend regular events."
Second year trainee, Sheffield

2016

"There is a huge focus on diversity at this firm, which was a major factor in my choosing Irwin Mitchell over others. I am a member of several diversity committees and it's taken very seriously here."
First year trainee, Bristol
"I think the firm are very forward thinking and appreciate that everyone has a life outside of work."
First year trainee, Manchester
"This is a strong point for Irwin Mitchell. The office is diverse in comparison to other City firms. We have the highest percentage of female partners of any firm in the City (still only around 37%) and we have IMpowered, which is the 'women in careers' type group, and an LGBT committee."
First year trainee, London
"We do a lot of work with local colleges to encourage social mobility. The firm has a huge number of women in high positions and there is a large LGBT network that includes several partners. There are also staff networks for members of an ethnic minority and disabled members of staff. Overall, the firm is by far the best I have worked at when it comes to diversity. It is something that the firm is proud of and puts a lot of effort into."
First year trainee, Sheffield
"There is an LGBT group and the firm is involved with various diversity projects."
First year trainee, Sheffield
"The firm has won awards for its diversity policies. I heard that female solicitors outnumber their male counterparts three to one here."
First year trainee, Birmingham

2015

"We run a programme called Irwin Mitchell Equal to ensure that people are represented from all types of background. I have not come into contact with any diversity issues here, which I can see as a positive, as I do not feel discriminated at work."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"Diversity varies across practice areas. Despite commitment to diversity being less for fee earners, there does appear to be a strong commitment to diversity in respect of support areas."
First year trainee, Sheffield
"In terms of diversity, there are many internal focus groups: those working for gender equality, representation and rights for those in the LGBT community, and those working to get the firm to be more racially diverse."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"There are a wide variety of groups and all in the firm are welcome at them, so they are very inclusive."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"There is a very clear diversity policy at Irwin Mitchell, and a variety of focus groups exist for specific groups of individuals. The majority of employees here are women, and the firm has a great attitude towards flexible working."
First year trainee, Bristol

2014

"We have various listening groups which touch on those matters. I am involved in one with respect to women and I think that it is a great initiative."
Second year trainee, London
"In my experience all people treated equally and opportunities are split fairly and on merits."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"We have a number of societies dedicated to respect to women, LGBT and ethnic minorities."
Second year trainee, Bristol
"IM actively encourages diversity and there are a number of organisations within the firm that specifically deal with these issues and promote their rights."
First year trainee, Birmingham
"We have a dedicated society for minorities and the working environment is open to people from all walks of life."
First year trainee, Sheffield
"We have groups for all minorities where non-minority allies are also welcome. I am openly bi-sexual and currently in a same sex relationship which is no secret and I am treated with the same level of respect as everyone else. The only issue I think the firm is facing is that the board is male-dominated and has been criticised for this but I hope is working to diversify the top."
Second year trainee, Leeds
"There is an exceptional diversity programme within the firm and it is highly publicised holding regular events across the various groups. I feel that I cannot comment on the majority of these areas currently as a trainee, however I have seen how well attended the diversity groups are and feel the office has a diverse work force."
First year trainee, Birmingham
