Trainee Retention

7.2 / 10

(based on 13 ratings in 2019)

2019

"They vary quite a lot depending on how many people want to qualify into the same departments. This year, for instance, retention rates are relatively low at 75% but a number of the trainees in the year above all wanted to qualify into the same department. Generally retention rates are very good and the firm aims to keep on every trainee as an associate."

"75% is pretty good."
Second year trainee, London
"It's dependent on practice area."
First year trainee, London
"Generally the retention rates are good. However, if a large number of the intake want to qualify into the same area there can be competition."
First year trainee, London
"The rates of retention used to be very high but now they are dropping. Certain departments are easier to qualify into than others. In general, if you work hard and aim for a department, it is very likely that you will be kept on."

"Retention rates are historically good and it feels as though there are plenty of opportunities in a variety of departments."
First year trainee, London
"Most people generally get offers and most accept."
First year trainee, London
"Retention rates are good but there could be more transparency about the number of departmental vacancies."
First year trainee, London
"It has gone up and down in recent years. The new qualifier selection process is not very clear and we are not explicitly told which departments have spaces or how many spaces are available."
First year trainee, London
"They used to be 100% but have had a slight dip recently. This is mainly due to large cohorts wanting to qualify into the same department rather than the firm cutting people out."
First year trainee, London
"Retention rates are good and the firm makes an effort to encourage people to stay. That said, there is a lack of transparency over departmental vacancies."
London
"Lots of trainees are aiming for roles in the same department and it is very hard to know who will be kept on."
First year trainee, London
"The retention rates are usually good."
