"As a Latham trainee you are truly treated like an adult and as part of the team. You get a lot of responsibility and good-quality work. This can often include direct client contact from a very early stage. Document reviews, drafting, research, project management and pulling together projects are all common tasks for a trainee."
Second year trainee, London
"I've been shocked at how high the quality of work has been. It has involved client meetings, drafting documents to be sent to clients and submissions to court as well as, predictably, lots of research."
First year trainee, London
"LW expects more from its trainees than other firms in the City, which has both positives and negatives. A definite positive is the quality of the work assigned to trainees as a result of the responsibility placed on them. The menial printing, scanning and bible-building tasks are few and far between, especially in comparison to peers at Magic Circle firms."
Second year trainee, London
"While typical trainee tasks can be mundane, placing them in the wider context of the deals helps to keep them relevant and more interesting. Opportunities to run workstreams provide the best opportunities to take responsibility and work independently."
Second year trainee, London
"My day-to-day role involves keeping up with emails, drafting ancillary documents, inputting comments to agreements, listening in on client calls and keeping up to date with closing checklists etc."
First year trainee, London
"Trainees tend to be given opportunities to prove themselves with complex research tasks or having a first go at drafting documents. If you show you are willing to put the effort in, do your best and ask thoughtful questions as they arise, you will be trusted more and given more interesting work."

"The level of client interaction can be low at the trainee level but trainees can earn responsibility, particularly on pro bono matters, and are expected to take ownership of key pieces of work."
First year trainee, London
"Good responsibility from an early stage in the seat. There are opportunities for greater responsibility if you are proactive, enthusiastic and good at the work. Obviously, the more menial trainee tasks must be done but generally the quality of tasks and deals is good."
Second year trainee, London / Hong Kong
"Client interaction inevitably varies according to which department you're sitting in. Partners and associates alike will give you as much responsibility as you could want, so you'll rarely be sitting across from another trainee on a deal."
First year trainee, London
"It varies massively by department. In smaller departments (tax, litigation, technology) there is a lot of client interaction and a great deal of trainee responsibility (and the ability to run with projects). In larger departments (mergers and acquisitions, banking) matters are extremely hierarchical."
Second year trainee, London
"Work quality can greatly vary from mundane proofing tasks to detailed research and analysis. Client interaction varies between teams. Corporate and finance teams tend to involve the most client interaction."
Second year trainee, London
"Every day I will be emailing and taking calls from clients directly. I'm privy to every call my supervisor makes with clients."

"I have plenty of client contact in my role; though it varies between departments and the nature of the deal on which you work."
First year trainee, London
"I find that client interaction varies greatly from department to department. Day-to-day responsibilities include drafting, filling in forms, taking care of post-completion matters, bibling and there is very little printing/photocopying for me to do."
Second year trainee, London
"I email clients and opposing counsel every day, but I have yet to receive an email from a trainee at another firm: this to me is indicative of the high level of responsibility that trainees are offered at Latham & Watkins. The partners and associates let you complete tasks if you are willing and able, and do not look down on you simply because you are a trainee."
First year trainee, London
"As a trainee I feel that you are given a lot of client contact. Latham & Watkins believe in getting trainees involved as much as they can in all aspects of the deal."
Second year trainee, London
"I have a good level of client interaction and I take the lead on various work streams and pro bono matters. These help to ensure that my work is fascinating and high-calibre."
First year trainee, London
"Trainees are always encouraged to liaise with clients directly from the beginning of the training contract. I have often been given total responsibility for various work streams on a deal."
