Having previously completed technology internships in various banks, I knew that I’d found my passion for the financial services industry but was yet to find the right place to start my career. Whilst looking for an internship to complete before starting my Master’s degree, I decided to search for something that would offer a different experience to my previous internships. I came across MarketAxess and was immediately captivated by their unique position at the intersection between technology and finance and applied. The application process was a breath of fresh air amongst the typical large companies I had been applying to, and after visiting the office for the assessment centre I felt immediately relaxed in the friendly and welcoming environment. I enjoyed the internship so much that when I received a permanent offer to stay on, I decided to join permanently rather than starting my Master’s!
As an Applications Developer, I work within an Agile team build the software that is directly used by MarketAxess’ clients like asset managers and investment banks. A typical day consists of getting into the office around 7:30AM (I’m an early bird!) to write code and enjoy the peace before the office gets busy. By 10AM, the whole team is in and we have our daily morning stand up between London and Bangalore. From this point onwards my day varies greatly, but it is generally a mixture of writing code, attending meetings, giving product demos and participating in Agile ceremonies such as backlog refinements and sprint planning.
Work highlight of my summer iternship
Whilst completing my internship I carried out a project to build an API mocking tool to aid the UI developers in building their components. This was particularly exciting as I knew that my project would add real value to other developers’ lives, which made the whole experience much more meaningful. Since joining after my internship, I’ve had the opportunity to work on a market-leading greenfield project that utilises some of the latest technologies available, from front-end frameworks like React to cloud infrastructure like Amazon Web Services (AWS).
Training and social programme
During the internship we received training on capital markets, with a particular focus on Fixed Income products due to the importance it holds in MarketAxess’ core product. Furthermore, we had a plentiful amount of presentations from different areas within the firm, which allowed us to gain a strong understanding of the business while developing our commercial awareness. This was all topped off a variety of social events from a scavenger hunt to a James Bond-themed speedboat ride down the Thames, which helped to build relationships between the interns. From a development perspective, I would say every day is a learning opportunity and a lot of training is done on the job, however we do have access to the Udemy library of videos that can be used to study a huge range of technical and nontechnical subjects. The company is very supportive if there are any additional courses that I would like to take, for example I will soon be doing a course to gain the AWS Cloud Developer certification.
What I enjoy most
I really enjoy building products that will be used by high profile clients within the financial services industry, from top investment banks to asset managers. At a time when the industry is experiencing rapid transformation, it’s very exciting time to be part of a firm that is leading the future of electronic trading and driving innovation. Each day I leave feeling like I’ve learnt something new after being surrounded by people who are always willing to share their knowledge!
