I applied to MBDA in the final year of my MSci – and originally applied for a different function which I don’t even recall now! I got a call back asking if I’d be willing to interview for an Integration & Systems Validation (ISV) role which ended up being a perfect fit for my background in Physics.
My graduate role places me within the Integration Team of the project I’m placed on. This team is responsible for proving the functionality of a weapon system from start to finish – from initial integration plans, to formal trials, firing trials, and in-service support. I love the hands-on aspect of ISV, getting to grips with real equipment and gaining a broad and detailed knowledge of a system that most people just don’t get.
I’ve had a range responsibilities on the grad scheme - including being placed in charge of designing and organising formal trials to prove system requirements on short timescales. This was challenging but extremely rewarding. Getting trials over the line and signed off gives a real sense of making a positive impact on a project. I’ve also had the to opportunity travel, helping with trials for the customer on real, installed system hardware which is an incredibly memorable experience that provided a tangible reminder of the importance of the work we do.
The MBDA graduate programme has also helped me by giving me lots of training and development opportunities. I’ve had optional technical training - where I felt I would benefit from learning more about a certain topic (Such as Missile Guidance, and Systems Proving), as well as training days required by some of the work I’ve done (including Safe Working at heights, and Manual Handling). There are also the graduate-specific development opportunities. A week-long graduate residential course gave us the chance to both develop professionally and also do fun activities together like coasteering and an open mic night! There’s also the chance to get involved with careers fairs and STEM outreach in schools.
Overall I count myself very lucky to have found myself at MBDA. It was clear that even as a large company there was a sense that employee wellbeing and a positive working culture were a massive focus. From the employee benefits to flexible working hours, MBDA has provided me with a job I’m happy to go to, on top of the exciting nature of the defence industry.
