Business Group Graduate

I joined the Met Office in April 2018 as a Business Group Graduate, a position designed to develop multidisciplinary skills in both science and business. Working for the Met Office had been a goal of mine since starting my A Levels in sixth form and was further enhanced through my University education. I studied a BSc in Physics at Cardiff University and was keen to work for an organisation that focussed on developing scientific research into beneficial public services, something that the Met Office takes great pride in delivering.

The nature of the graduate scheme has meant that I have been able to complete projects in a range of industry sectors, including aviation, offshore energy and surface transport. The projects assigned to me by my manager were selected to be meaningful and to further expand the skillset that I already had. My progress has been tracked through regular catch-ups with my line manager and I have been able to shape my own development objectives for future career opportunity. This has included the chance to shadow staff in other departments to learn about the wider organisation. The scheme has also taken me to several conferences in multiple locations, including Slovakia. Here, I have networked with other scientists outside of the office and learnt about similar research on an international scale.

My experience, so far, of working at the Met Office has been hugely beneficial and career defining. Not only have I gained a huge amount of confidence in my own ability, but I have had the chance to make a worthwhile contribution towards Met Office projects affecting public infrastructure and safety. I would definitely recommend!
