Informal Training & Mentoring

8.8 / 10

(based on 12 ratings in 2019)

2019

"All solicitors and partners are approachable and happy to take the time to explain tasks and clarify jobs. They certainly make good mentors. Feedback can be sporadic but I know that if I ask for it, it will be given. The amount of praise and recognition you receive is team dependent, we could certainly benefit from more recognition of whether we are on the right track or not."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"Fee earners and partners are all very accessible and approachable. The firm has a mentoring system but it's up to the trainee to reach out to the partner mentor, which can be intimidating for some."
Second year trainee, Guildford, Surrey
"Both the formal mentorship programme and the informal mentors that I have made have been very influential and supportive and have really gone the extra mile. Partners/solicitors are happy to provide feedback and talk you through your work and their amendments, if any. As a trainee, you also get recognised and praised for your work and using your initiative."
First year trainee, London
"I think the informal training process is good and all the teams are very supportive. There is a trainee buddy system and also a mentor system between partners and trainees. Both are very informal and there could be more guidance as to what is expected from mentors/mentees."
Second year trainee, Oxford
"You get a designated mentor and trainee buddy in the first year. There are also opportunities to take online courses."
Second year trainee, Oxford
"The mid-seat and end-of-seat reviews provide great opportunities to talk through progress with partners. I received regular and detailed feedback from fee earners I did work for."
Second year trainee, Guildford

"I was provided with a buddy who met me every two weeks and provided lots of support in one team. In another team there was nothing of this nature and I felt I needed more help. I also have a partner mentor who is accessible and I feel that other partners are also approachable."
Basingstoke
"Some partners and solicitors are easy to approach and are clear in their feedback, making sure that you know when you've done something well or how you can improve. Others can sometimes be too busy to do so. The firm has a mentoring system but it's up to the trainee to reach out to the partner mentor, which can be intimidating for some."
London
"People are always available and every question you ask gets a clear and thought-out answer."
London
"Solicitors and partners are all very accessible and approachable. I'm very satisfied with the informal training and mentoring so far."
Guildford
"Associates in the team are very friendly and helpful and my team partner is also very approachable should I have a question."
Basingstoke
"The vast majority of the solicitors and partners are very approachable and will often provide helpful feedback. There are, of course, exceptions to the rule but, on the whole, the people are approachable and recognise your contribution."

"I've had lots of support from partners and associates who are very approachable and willing to help. Second-year trainees have also been very helpful and friendly and offered lots of tips."
First year trainee, Oxford
"Partners and associates are always good at saying thank you for work you've undertaken and are always available for questions. There are also formal feedback assessments that take place every three months."
First year trainee, London
"My mentor and partners have been very approachable. Feedback is given on pieces of work."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"Everyone is happy to assist with questions and queries. Partners are good at saying thank you for hard work and have been known to buy thank you gifts for trainees."
Second year trainee, Surrey
"There are structures in place but the meetings and catch ups don't always occur when they should. You mostly have to organise them yourself."
First year trainee, Guildford
"You're assigned a buddy who is usually the most recent trainee in your department – they're there to help ease you into the department and help you if you have any questions throughout that seat. You are also assigned a mentor (a senior partner in the firm) and mine took me out for a lovely lunch to get to know me. If I have any issues or questions, I feel as though I can now direct them to him and we meet to discuss how I am getting on every few months. Feedback is usually given on work by your supervising partner and, if it isn't, you can ask for it and the partners are very happy to provide it."
First year trainee, London
"This is dependent on who your mentor is. I have had a very good mentor who has offered me detailed and constructive feedback and also had a mentor who has not been able to offer the same level of support. It depends on the demands of your team."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"I have a mentor in another department, which is helpful because it feels separate from my day-to-day work."
First year trainee, Basingstoke

"We have a mentor and buddy system. Trainees are assigned a second year buddy, and a mentor, who is either a partner or a senior associate. It is good to have somebody that you know you can approach if you have a problem."
Second year trainee, London
"I feel very well supported by my supervising partner and the associates I have worked with. I have been given more responsibility than I had expected, but very rarely felt that I was on my own without support. I have a weekly meeting with my partner and senior associate to discuss my case-load. In terms of praise, the partners are often very busy, but still have largely found time to tell me when they have been particularly pleased with my work."
Second year trainee, Guildford
"We are each paired with a mentor who is chosen so as to be outside of our normal day-to-day working life. My mentor regularly takes me for lunch to catch up, but I haven't had any need for him as anything more than a friend. That said, I do think it's great that he is there as almost an impartial help with any issues I am facing in or out of work."
First year trainee, Guildford
"In my experience, partners and associates tend to be very approachable, and are willing to assist with your learning."
Second year trainee, London
"Whilst each trainee is given specific mentors, I have found that everyone is willing to help and give advice, particularly the younger fee earners."
Second year trainee, Guildford
