Satisfaction with Work

8.8 / 10

(based on 12 ratings in 2019)

2019

"I'm generally satisfied at this early stage. My tasks generally involve taking attendance notes, sitting in on calls and meetings with clients, conducting research and drafting responses to clients to be checked by senior fee earners."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"The quality of work that we are given as trainees is very good. I was fortunate to have a lot of early responsibility in my own seat and there was a clear progression from the start of my seat to the end. By the end of the seat, I was very much doing the same work as the associates. I also had the support that I needed if I was struggling."
First year trainee, London
"I am very satisfied with the quality of work I am assigned. Fee earners involve you in drafting documents from day one in your seat."
Second year trainee, Guildford, Surrey
"I am currently in my second week in the clinical negligence team and have been given a lot of responsibility and exposure already. I could be contacting clients and experts, attending conferences or updating schedules of losses. There are, of course, still the minor tasks such as chasing experts for their reports and responses to letters."
First year trainee, Guildford
"As a trainee you are given a great deal of responsibility and are involved in all aspects of a case from updating the client and drafting correspondence to preparing bundles, drafting instructions to counsel and court documents."
First year trainee, London
"I am tasked with drafting letters, wills and other such documents day to day. I will draft these and send them back for review before having feedback on my work."
First year trainee, Basingstoke/Reading

2017

"There's generally very interesting and varied work with the opportunity to try most tasks that qualified solicitors do. There are occasionally the less interesting tasks such as checking bundles etc, which I'd prefer not to have to do, but I think it's better than at a lot of firms."
Basingstoke
"It varies. On some days I will be drafting various documents while on others I will be liaising with clients/organisations or I may be in and out of client meetings."
London
"The tasks that you undertake as a trainee can vary, from delivering bundles to counsel to drafting witness statements and instructions to counsel. In some transactional seats you are given a lot of responsibility and are the point person for the client on smaller matters, meaning that you are the one to update the client and liaise with solicitors on the other side (with partner supervision, of course)."
London
"I'm very satisfied. There are varying levels of tasks and responsibilities but appropriate guidance is always given."
London
"I have been given high-level work from the outset. I draft documents, meet clients and attend court rather than just file away and photocopy documents."
Basingstoke
"The quality of work is good on the whole."
Basingstoke
"There is a high level of responsibility and you are able to undertake small matters alone with supervision. The level of responsibility does vary between departments but, on the whole, you are actively involved in a number of matters."
London

2016

"I've had lots of client contact while being supervised by a partner or senior associate. I've had plenty of opportunity to develop research and drafting skills."
First year trainee, Oxford
"For the most part, the work is interesting and you feel that you are making a real contribution to the case. Tasks include researching points of law, drafting instructions to counsel, writing attendance notes and preparing bundles for counsel/court. The work can range from the highly mundane to the very interesting."
First year trainee, London
"It's varied work that includes meeting clients or talking to them on the telephone, taking witness statements, attending inquests, drafting letters and liaising with hospitals."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"I've been given hands on and varied tasks from day one with supervision easily accessible."
Second year trainee, Surrey
"My days vary. I attend weekly client meetings where I also prepare attendance notes and I have attended court alone with just counsel and the client. I also prepare bundles and write letters to clients. A lot of responsibility is given but a lot of help and support is also offered."
First year trainee, London
"Very satisfied. I am currently in a private client seat and have been given a combination of work. This ranges from challenging research into tax laws to less demanding drafting of powers of attorney. There is a great mix."
First year trainee, Guildford
"This is very dependent on the seat. The private client seats tend to be very interactive and hands on, whereas the more corporate and commercial seats are researching and drafting based."
First year trainee, Cambridge
"I have been very lucky to have assisted, drafted or observed very interesting work. I have been able to attend conferences with counsel and draft documents such as client care letters, risk assessments and witness statements."
First year trainee, Basingstoke

2015

"My satisfaction has varied between seats. Generally, I have had good client exposure and been given responsibility to take smaller matters forward, with support as required."
Second year trainee, London
"In my current seat I have been given day-to-day client contact on every matter I work on, and I am given a high level of responsibility, within my capability. This is coupled with as much supervision as I need. On some of my files I am the main contact for the client, and on other matters I assist with drafting documents and providing advice."
First year trainee, Basingstoke
"Personally, I have not had much client interaction although some people have a great deal. It really depends on the department that you are in."
First year trainee, London
"I think your role and day to day work evolves as you progress in a seat. At first I was assisting the partners and associates with their work, but I now have my own matters to work on, communicating with clients directly and primarily. This is in addition to coming up with solutions and actions. I am supervised throughout this work. I undertake interesting and highly varied work, and now attend partner meetings after requesting to do so. It does go to show that at Penningtons Manches they are always happy for trainees to step up, and really want you to do well and accommodate you."
First year trainee, Guildford
"Towards the end of my Training Contract I have been given a lot more responsibility and now do much of the same work as NQ associates, albeit with supervision."
Second year trainee, Guildford
"I regularly attend client meetings and correspond directly with clients. In addition, I am constantly responsible for drafting documents, and finalising deals with minimal supervision, which gives invaluable experience."
Second year trainee, Oxford
