"The supervisors I have had have given me invaluable advice and support. They have been approachable and have provided really good feedback."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"As a trainee you get formal feedback every three months by way of a mid-seat review and an end-of-seat review. The solicitors in your team all feed back on your performance so this is a really good way of understanding how you're performing. I don't tend to get much in the way of feedback outside of my reviews unless I specifically ask for it."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"Partners are easily accessible and approachable. Constant feedback, whether positive or constructive, is provided to enable development."
First year trainee, London
"My supervisors have been very approachable and attentive on the whole. There is also the opportunity to get involved in informal mentoring sessions with junior colleagues."
Second year trainee, Edinburgh
"The solicitors and partners are very supportive and always try to provide helpful guidance. The praise and recognition is usually formalised during the mid-seat and end-of-seat review sessions with your supervisor, but there will always be some feedback on individual pieces of work."
First year trainee, Manchester
"Some supervisors are better at this than others. In one seat, I was allocated a partner contact as well as a supervisor and it was really valuable to get that senior insight and contact. I've also been encouraged to think about a long term mentor for post qualification."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"Almost all of the solicitors I have worked with have been very approachable and my supervisors have been excellent in mentoring me, giving feedback and answering questions."
Second year trainee, Belfast

"It varies from individual to individual but the majority of people I have worked with so far are good at giving informal feedback and sharing information to help me better understand what is needed. For example, if I have produced a first draft of a document for someone, they will then take a minute to talk me through the changes they've made and make sure I see the final copy as it is issued."
First year trainee, Manchester
"Each trainee has a supervisor and I have been fortunate to have some really good ones. They each operate differently but generally have informal catch ups as well as the formal mid- and end-of-seat reviews. Sometimes you have to actively seek feedback and it's good to do this."
Second year trainee, Edinburgh
"The informal training has been exceptional. I have been given a high level of responsibility, received regular feedback, been constantly involved in discussions surrounding case and transaction strategy and been involved in client management. Senior lawyers have never withheld praise and good work has always been rewarded with increased responsibility."
First year trainee, London
"Most people are very good at mentoring trainees and juniors. Some partners are really exceptional at this and will take a lot of time to try to help you develop, particularly if they notice that you have an interest in their field."
Second year trainee, Manchester
"There are some amazing mentors at the firm. When I finished one of my seats a partner was pleased with my performance and made a point of calling another partner in the team that I wanted to qualify into to give feedback about me. Showing that interest and going out of his way to speak well of me meant a huge amount."
Second year trainee, Leeds
"This isn't something that is set up but rather something that you create for yourself. However, I don't doubt that anyone who was approached would be more than happy to help. The feedback structure throughout your training contract is good and all the supervisors that I have had have been excellent."
Second year trainee, London
"You have to set objectives at the start of your seat and add progress throughout it. Each trainee is assigned a supervisor and must attend weekly supervisor/trainee meetings. This helps you to get to know your supervisor and keep them up to date with your workload."
First year trainee, Belfast

"My personal experience of all the partners and mentors I have worked with has been very positive. I have received a good level of support from all fee earners and my supervisor in my most recent seat has been extremely supportive. I receive a good level of feedback, both at the appropriate appraisal stage and more generally and also receive constructive criticism when necessary."
First year trainee, Edinburgh
"All solicitors and partners are extremely approachable and great to work with. Feedback is better in certain departments than others."
Second year trainee, London
"People are generally very accessible and Pinsent Masons lawyers tend to make good mentors."
Second year trainee, Birmingham
"Each trainee is given a supervisor. The supervisor involvement varies according to the person but, on the whole, they are supportive and helpful. We set objectives and have regular catch ups. They are a good point of contact if the fee earner you are working for is off and an issue has arisen."
First year trainee, Edinburgh
"Solicitors are very accessible and I have always felt able to approach people to seek their advice on various things. While the partners are often busy or out of the office, they are always happy to talk to you or go for coffee when able if you have a question."
First year trainee, London
"This varies enormously depending on your supervisor. A positive is that everyone is very approachable, even partners."
Second year trainee, London
"Everyone has been supportive in helping me to improve my skills in the teams I have been in so far. I have found everyone to be approachable and feedback can be given as an informal email or during my regular reviews. There is enough feedback (not lots) but I wouldn't say that it's a big part of the internal culture."
First year trainee, Glasgow
