Formal Training

7.0 / 10

(based on 6 ratings in 2018)

"You are given a lot of responsibility, which makes you pick up skills quickly and there are regular training sessions."
"There's a session at least once every week for most weeks and there are training programmes focusing on hard knowledge (as opposed to soft skills) that's needed to execute most deals."
"There's a regular diet of varied training programmes including formal sessions, informal lunch sessions, practice group-specific sessions and sessions beamed in from New York. The training programmes can be useful to give you an idea of how to tackle something but I think you pick up the skills themselves from having a go."

"There are morning training sessions once a week on various practice areas."
First year trainee, London
"We have between one and three training sessions a week that are primarily focused on legal skills. I've gained a lot of knowledge from these training programmes. In terms of soft skills, courses on accounts and email practices have been useful in making me a more well-rounded trainee."

"The training programme has improved hugely since the firm hired a dedicated in-house training supervisor. Sessions are usually conducted about once per week for the trainees and junior lawyers and these are regularly attended by partners or senior associates who like to chip in with insight and anecdotes. This makes for very interesting sessions that are relevant and circle back to the work we do. We also have specific accounting training from an external provider, which has helped me become more familiar with payment mechanics."
Second year trainee, London (currently seconded to Hong Kong)
"Some of the training has been excellent, having MacIntyre Hudson come in to teach us about accounts was a particular highlight."
First year trainee, London
"There's well organised and wide-ranging training both in-house and externally. Training on the fundamentals of accountancy as they relate to practice is especially helpful."
First year trainee, London

"The training sessions have been more ad hoc, rather than having a formal outline and training programme. When they have been held these sessions have been really helpful and are very focused on the work you have done or will be doing at S&C."
Second year trainee, London
"As the training programme is quite new, it's quite easy to ask for training sessions when we think they would be useful."
Second year trainee, London
"I've found the training programme to be a bit poor so far. Training is normally done by fee earners, and the office has just had a busy few months so they haven't really been free to put extra time aside to train us. However, the firm's recently announced that they will be rolling out a more extensive training programme – including hiring a couple of extra people to work on the training/professional-support side of things."
First year trainee, London
"The focus is to learn through the work we do rather than on formal training. However, we have some training sessions on general practice areas and the firm's clients alongside our US associates."
First year trainee, London
"There are a number of training programmes and practice-specific lunches where updates are provided on the deals that are going through the office at any time. These programmes provide a useful way of learning about the relevant stages of a transaction and what to expect, using real life examples rather than learning about subjects in the abstract."
Second year trainee, Melbourne

"Training is very bespoke and specific to our needs. Partners and training team are very responsive to our requests and work hard to identify areas where we need extra support. Training has helped both my general legal skills (knowledge of law, drafting) but also my communication skills and confidence generally."
Second year trainee,
"The training tends to be done on a more ad hoc basis than at some more established training contracts. Here the trainees are the drivers for what sort of training we would like and would be most beneficial to us."
First year trainee,
"Given the small intake of trainees, the firm is able to tailor training sessions to our specific needs."
Second year trainee,
