Informal Training & Mentoring

7.2 / 10

(based on 6 ratings in 2018)

"It varies from supervisor to supervisor. Most are extremely engaged and invested in your personal development and provide excellent mentorship."
"Most partners are very open and easy to talk to."
"Many of the senior associates here have become excellent mentors who offer both praise and criticism when needed."
"This has been surprisingly good, even from very busy partners. Good work is acknowledged and you will also get picked up on things that haven't gone well."

"I have had the distinct pleasure of working with some really kind, understanding and brilliant individual lawyers in the firm, all of whom are very ready to listen to you when you're in need and offer you advice every chance they get. I do think that some more formal mentoring (where we chat in a structured setting about ways we can improve) would be excellent, but I do understand that that's hard to do in such a busy office. Beyond that, I've really loved the mentors I've had. I've usually received prompt feedback on my work and the people I've worked for have been quick to point out both my flaws and my triumphs."

"Partners are very accessible. They would rather you ask questions and produce useful work than struggle with something for a while and still not find the answer. Associates are happy to explain certain deal aspects and their door is generally always open for a chat. They are happy to give general advice about working in certain teams based on their own experience too."

"It depends on the senior lawyers in question but there are some real star mentors in the office."

"I feel as if I could talk to anyone if there was a problem."

"I have found that partners and senior associates are really approachable and great role-models. When sharing and office with a partner or senior lawyer at the firm you really learn a lot just by seeing how they work, take calls etc."

"The supervisors take their role as mentors really seriously. They're always willing to spend time explaining the background of a deal and trying to get you involved in their work."

"Informal training is really something which I have found varies from person to person. People are always willing to answer questions and explain how to carry out a task. However, if you don't ask for it, it depends on the person whether they will offer feedback of their own accord or not. Some people will give this every time, others will forget if they are busy. I can imagine that this is not exclusive to S&C."

"The associates and partners are very accessible, they oversee our work and ensure we have plenty to do. They are always on hand to provide explanations or respond to queries, however small or silly they may seem. I often get feedback on my work with suggestions for improvement."

"The senior lawyers are very good mentors. They are happy to take time to discuss work and how it could be improved, and why they have made certain amendments. They are quick to congratulate trainees on good pieces of work and we have quarterly performance reviews to discuss areas of strength and areas for improvement."

"I have found partners and senior associates to all be very inspiring and excellent role models."
Second year trainee,
"Partners are very accessible, and trainees typically speak to and work with their supervising partners every day. Although this varies with different partners, they are typically very happy to teach and take the time to give feedback."
Second year trainee,
"Both associates and partners are very approachable and helpful and provide useful feedback and tips on how to improve. When first starting out there are a lot of questions that seem silly to ask and like they might be wasting people's time, but the responses are always full and helpful, in a non-patronising way and there is no sense that any partner or associate feels you should just figure it out for yourself."
First year trainee,
"Every trainee is supervised by a partner or senior lawyer. You have great exposure to working with, and receiving feedback from, all lawyers that you work with and the firm has a genuine 'open-door' policy."
Second year trainee,
"Associates and partners are very approachable. The onus is on the trainees to seek feedback, so if you want feedback, you can just ask. We have the standard review structure (mid-seat, end-of-seat)."
First year trainee,

"The standards are very high, but there is excellent access to very senior practitioners."
