About Weil, Gotshal & Manges
With approximately 1,100 lawyers in 16 offices across the US, Europe and Asia, Weil operates according to the “one firm” principle, allowing it to bring the right mix of firm wide skill and local market presence to deliver coordinated legal advice to help its clients achieve their sophisticated goals and objectives.
Established in 1996, Weil’s London office is the largest of its European offices and the hub of its European practice. The office is a leading player in the UK legal market and is consistently regarded as one of the most successful London offices of a US-based law firm. The firm supports a varied client base of European, US and global private equity houses, corporates and financial institutions on domestic and cross-border matters.
Weil’s strategy is focused on long-term investment in recruiting and retaining exceptional talent at all levels. The firm’s people celebrate diversity and inclusion, and its award-winning pro bono programme is deeply ingrained in the firm’s culture.
Main areas of work:
Weil provides clients with legal expertise at the highest level across its key practices of private equity, corporate/M&A, funds, banking and finance, structured finance, restructuring and dispute resolution, and has been involved in some of the most significant, high-profile and prestigious mandates across all its legal specialisms.
A career at Weil is challenging, technical and requires trainees to work under pressure. With this in mind, we are looking for bright, articulate candidates who can use their initiative, are comfortable in the spotlight and who thrive when challenged and placed out of their comfort zone. Successful applicants will need to be business-minded with plenty of entrepreneurial flair and commercial acumen, as well as work effectively in a team.
Whether you’re applying for our Fast Track Scheme, Vacation Scheme or a Training Contract, we welcome applications from all universities and all degree disciplines. Our entry requirements are AAB at A level (or equivalent) and a 2:1 degree (obtained or predicted).
Mentoring and support:
As you grow and progress in your role at Weil, we will ensure that you receive extensive support and mentoring to help you develop and achieve your potential.
Upon joining the firm, each trainee is allocated a Trainee Responsible Partner (TRP). The partner remains their TRP for the full two years of training and is there to provide objective mentoring and advice, as well as to help the trainee raise their profile within the office.
We have up to 20 places on our two-week paid schemes, which run during the spring and summer each year. Applications are open to all post-graduates and undergraduates who are able to accept a training contract in 2022, whatever degree discipline you are studying or have studied.
The scheme gives hands-on experience in different practice areas, where you will work alongside some of Weil’s most senior lawyers carrying out similar tasks to trainee associates. To help you get even more of an insight into life at Weil, there will be various talks and workshops to attend on top of the day-to-day work.
You will be mentored and supported throughout, and your supervisor will always be there to provide constructive feedback and answer questions. You'll also have the support of a trainee buddy as well as regular touch-points with Graduate Recruitment. Weil also organise a number of social events, so you can get to know Weil’s lawyers and staff in a more relaxed setting. You'll also be paid £500 per week.
Fast track schemes:
Our one-week placement will see you sharing an office with an associate, who will act as your supervisor, and undertaking work similar to that of a trainee associate. You will be supported throughout your placement and will be given a real insight into life at Weil.
Perform well on the scheme and you will be “fast tracked” to an assessment day, where you will have to opportunity to interview for a 2023 Training Contract. The assessment day will take place in autumn 2020.
